Cops cuff another teen over alleged Scattered Spider attack that broke Vegas casinos

A teen surrendered to Las Vegas police and was booked on suspicion of breaking into multiple Las Vegas casino networks in 2023, as part of a series of hacks attributed to Scattered Spider.

The FBI’s Las Vegas Cyber Task Force, which includes the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Cyber Investigative Group, probed the casino attacks, which occurred between August and October 2023.

“Through the course of the investigation, detectives were able to identify a teenage male as a suspect in the case,” the cops said in announcing the arrest.

The juvenile suspect turned himself in on September 17, and was booked on three counts of obtaining and using personal identifying information of another person to harm or impersonate, one count of extortion, one count of conspiracy to commit extortion, and one count of unlawful acts regarding computers.

He is currently being held in Nevada’s Clark County Juvenile Detention Center, and the Clark County District Attorney’s office is seeking to transfer the teen’s case to the criminal division to face these charges as an adult.

The Las Vegas police declined to answer The Register‘s questions.

This arrest comes as British cops last week arrested two other teens accused of being members of the notorious cybercrime gang. The two UK teens, Thalha Jubair, 19, from East London, and Owen Flowers, 18, from Walsall, were charged with crimes related to the cyberattack on Transport for London (TfL) in August 2024.

And while neither Flowers nor Jubair has been officially linked by authorities to the Las Vegas casino attacks, a 17-year-old from Walsall was arrested last year on suspicion of their alleged involvement in the MGM Resorts intrusion.

In addition to the UK charges against the two teens, American authorities also charged Jubair for his alleged role in more than 120 intrusions with at least $115 million in ransom payments. 

At least seven other suspected Scattered Spider members were arrested last year as part of wider probes that followed the high-profile Las Vegas casino network intrusions. ®
