{"id":7161,"date":"2018-07-22T17:34:44","date_gmt":"2018-07-22T17:34:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/29156\/UK-Security-Officials-Warn-Of-New-Risks-From-Huawei.html"},"modified":"2018-07-22T17:34:44","modified_gmt":"2018-07-22T17:34:44","slug":"uk-security-officials-warn-of-new-risks-from-huawei","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/uk-security-officials-warn-of-new-risks-from-huawei\/","title":{"rendered":"UK Security Officials Warn Of New Risks From Huawei"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"js-ie-storytop\" class=\"ie--storytop\">\n<div class=\"cnnplayer\" id=\"cnnplayer0\">\n<div class=\"cnnVidplayer\">\n<div class=\"summaryImg\" id=\"vid0\" href=\"\/video\/technology\/2016\/05\/20\/inside-chinas-silicon-valley.cnnmoney\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.cdn.turner.com\/money\/dam\/assets\/160520025040-inside-chinas-silicon-valley-00002913-1024x576.jpg\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" alt=\"See what a Chinese tech giant's campus is like\" border=\"0\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"speakable\">Top UK security officials say they can only provide &#8220;limited assurance&#8221; that telecom equipment provided by Huawei poses no threat to national security.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The Chinese company, which sells smartphones and telecommunications equipment around the world, is monitored in the United Kingdom by a government oversight panel called the Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">In an annual report published on Thursday, the panel warned that &#8220;shortcomings in Huawei&#8217;s engineering processes have exposed new risks in the UK telecommunication networks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Oversight Board can provide only limited assurance that any risks to UK national security from Huawei&#8217;s involvement in the UK&#8217;s critical networks have been sufficiently mitigated,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p>Huawei has repeatedly come under fire from lawmakers and government officials in the United States who accuse it of working under the influence of the Chinese government.<\/p>\n<p>The company has repeatedly denied that its products pose security risks, but it has remained largely shut out of the US market. It insists it&#8217;s a private company owned by its employees.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/06\/28\/technology\/huawei-chairman-congress-rubio-banks\/index.html\"><span class=\"inStoryHeading\">Related: Top Huawei exec blasts US lawmakers as &#8216;closed-minded and ill-informed&#8217;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Huawei said Thursday that the company &#8220;welcomes&#8221; the UK report.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are grateful for this feedback and committed to addressing these issues,&#8221; the spokesperson said in a statement. &#8220;Cyber security remains Huawei&#8217;s top priority, and we will continue to actively improve our engineering processes and risk management systems.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Centre was established in 2010 to mitigate risks arising from Huawei&#8217;s involvement in UK national security infrastructure. It is chaired by Ciaran Martin, the CEO of the UK National Cyber Security Centre.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the National Cyber Security Centre said Thursday that it was &#8220;fully committed to the oversight arrangements&#8221; regarding Huawei.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This government and British telecoms operators work with Huawei at home and abroad to ensure the United Kingdom can continue to benefit from new technology while managing cyber security risks,&#8221; the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>The National Cyber Security Centre is part of Britain&#8217;s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) spy agency.<\/p>\n<p>Previous annual reports from the oversight panel had concluded that risks related to Huawei had been &#8220;sufficiently mitigated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span
