{"id":6679,"date":"2018-07-18T10:18:32","date_gmt":"2018-07-18T10:18:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/paypals-pal-venmo-spaffs-your-pals-payments-and-yours\/"},"modified":"2018-07-18T10:18:32","modified_gmt":"2018-07-18T10:18:32","slug":"paypals-pal-venmo-spaffs-your-pals-payments-and-yours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/paypals-pal-venmo-spaffs-your-pals-payments-and-yours\/","title":{"rendered":"PayPal&#8217;s pal Venmo spaffs your pals&#8217; payments \u2013 and yours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PayPal-owned digital wallet Venmo shares way too much data via its public API, according to Berlin-based researcher Hang Do Thi Duc.<\/p>\n<p>If users accept the default setting on their account when they sign up, Do Thi Duc found that their transaction details are accessible via the service&#8217;s API, making it \u201cincredibly easy to see what people are buying, who they\u2019re sending money to, and why\u201d, she <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/22-8miles.com\/public-by-default\/\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The API is visible at Venmo <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/venmo.com\/api\/v5\/public\">here<\/a>. It allowed Do Thi Duc to download more than 200 million transactions processed in 2017. The researcher said \u201cI learned an alarming amount\u201d about users, their transactions, and what they were buying.<\/p>\n<p>Including cannabis (thanks to records of a seller with more than 900 transactions last year), food, romantic gifts, pizzas, AirBNB rents \u2013 all carrying personal info far beyond what most Venmo users think is public.<\/p>\n<div class=\"promo_article\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2016\/04\/29\/venmo.jpg?x=174&amp;y=115&amp;crop=1\" width=\"174\" height=\"115\" alt=\"Venmo on phone\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 title=\"FTC investigation 'may result in substantial costs'\">PayPal probed over Venmo cash-flinging app<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2016\/04\/29\/ftc_investigating_paypal_over_venmo\/\"><span>READ MORE<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Venmo seems quite proud of the API&#8217;s power, since <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/venmo.com\/api\/v5\/public?limit=1\">this link<\/a> shows the most recent transaction, whatever it might be, from a user who hasn&#8217;t marked their settings as \u201cprivate\u201d in the app.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s problematic that there is a public feed which includes real names, their profile links (to access past transactions), possibly their Facebook IDs and essentially their network of friends they spend time with,\u201d Do Thi Duc wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Venmo <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/jul\/17\/venmo-payments-app-default-privacy-settings-public-information\">told<\/a> <em>The Guardian<\/em> \u201cOur users trust us with their money and personal information, and we take this responsibility and applicable privacy laws very seriously.
