The study, published in Careerminds\u2019 white paper, <a href=\"https:\/\/careerminds.com\/resources\/redeployment-gap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The AI Redeployment Gap: What Companies Lose by Hiring over Reskilling, reveals<\/a> that 92% of HR professionals and 88% of people managers believe employees within their organizations could be reskilled for AI-related roles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/innovation\/workera-study-ai-skills-upskilling-2026\/\">Nearly 70% of workers use AI regularly now \u2013 but many get no time to upskill<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-ziff-davis-exco-video is-injected\" id=\"exco-video-block-6a8e06fe4d2cfb09fd68fb54-1425627-4\" data-exco-video-id data-exco-playlist-id=\"6a8e06fe4d2cfb09fd68fb54\" data-exco-video-title data-exco-video-src data-exco-video-duration=\"0\" data-exco-video-poster data-exco-suppress-ads=\"0\" data-exco-autoplay=\"0\" data-exco-sticky=\"1\">\n<p class=\"exco-video__eyebrow\">More from ZDNET<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Yet 51% of HR professionals and 47% of people managers report that their organizations are hiring externally for new AI-related positions, compared with just 42% in each group who report redeploying existing employees.<\/p>\n<p>The research was conducted in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/censuswide.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Censuswide<\/a> and surveyed 595 US HR professionals and 547 US people managers, ages 25\u201365, working at organizations with 500-10,000 or more employees. The research was conducted May 15\u201326, 2026.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/business\/ai-storage-demand-seagate-study\/\"><strong>Businesses finally seeing AI ROI, but 62% can\u2019t handle the storage demands<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompanies are investing in AI while potentially overlooking one of their most valuable resources: the people they already employ,\u201d said Mark Saddic, senior partner at Careerminds, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/new-research-92-of-hr-professionals-believe-employees-can-be-reskilled-for-ai-jobs-yet-external-hiring-outpaces-redeployment-302927992.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why companies struggle to identify employees for AI reskilling<\/h2>\n<p>Reskilling, especially for AI, isn\u2019t easy to track. Limited visibility into individual skill sets and which employees should be reskilled was cited as a potential barrier by 43% of HR professionals and 34% of managers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/innovation\/pearson-workera-acquisition-ai-upskilling\/\">Pearson\u2019s Workera deal targets a big workplace problem: No time to AI upskill<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not the first time that the management of skills development has come up regarding AI. In September, educational giant Pearson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/innovation\/pearson-workera-acquisition-ai-upskilling\/\">agreed to acquire Workera<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/innovation\/workera-study-ai-skills-upskilling-2026\/\">AI-native skills platform<\/a> used by organizations such as ServiceNow, Accenture, and the US Space Force.<\/p>\n<p>Careermind\u2019s data revealed that 87% of HR pros and 84% of managers believe their organizations are adequately considering reskilling employees for future roles. However, the findings suggest that these organizations may believe they are prioritizing internal talent development, even though their hiring practices reveal otherwise.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How AI hiring and reskilling differ by industry<\/h2>\n<p>Response to AI-related workforce needs isn\u2019t equal across the board. The findings reveal significant differences in how industries are responding to these needs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/education\/employ-report-ai-hr-hiring\/\">Your AI-polished resumes are recruiters\u2019 new top stressor<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For example, in the technology and telecom industries, external hiring outpaces redeployment by 15%. At the same time, media and entertainment is the only sector surveyed in which both groups report redeployment at least as frequently as external hiring.
