According to the most recent data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heise.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heise.de<\/a> via Android Studio, as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.androidauthority.com\/android-distribution-numbers-october-2026-3729798\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.androidauthority.com\/android-distribution-numbers-october-2026-3729798\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Android Authority<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/android-17-is-out-with-june-pixel-drop-whats-new\/\">Android 17<\/a> has reached just 1% of active devices since its release in June 2026.<\/p>\n<p>While Android 16 is finally the most used Google OS for Android devices, at 25.4% of active Android devices, these distribution figures indicate that getting users to upgrade to even newer software is an uphill battle.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s true that Android 17 has had less time to reach devices than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/updated-to-android-16-you-should-enable-these-2-critical-security-features-asap-heres-why\/\">Android 16<\/a> did when the previous distribution snapshot was published, but the minuscule adoption rate underscores how slowly the latest release is infiltrating the Android ecosystem.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-ziff-davis-exco-video is-injected\" id=\"exco-video-block-6a8e06fe4d2cfb09fd68fb54-1416621-4\" data-exco-video-id data-exco-playlist-id=\"6a8e06fe4d2cfb09fd68fb54\" data-exco-video-title data-exco-video-src data-exco-video-duration=\"0\" data-exco-video-poster data-exco-suppress-ads=\"0\" data-exco-autoplay=\"0\" data-exco-sticky=\"1\">\n<p class=\"exco-video__eyebrow\">More from ZDNET<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/android-17-web-browsing-security-privacy-features-update\/\">How Android 17 stops network snoops and SMS blasters now<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Plus, the data show that more Android users than not are running versions that are many years old. I\u2019m all for not fixing what\u2019s not broken, but when Android 14 is the second most widely used version (15.% of devices are still running it), while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/whats-in-android-15-notification-cooldown-and-other-handy-new-features\/\">Android 15<\/a> trails not far behind at 14.7%, there\u2019s a pretty large chunk of individuals who may be putting themselves (and their data) at risk.<\/p>\n<p>And it doesn\u2019t end there. Android 13 and Android 11 are still on the table for 11.8% and 10.1% of users, with almost another 10% still using Android 12. That\u2019s about another 30% of users still running <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/android-13-is-officially-here-if-you-have-the-right-kind-of-phone-that-is\/\">Android 13<\/a> or older.<\/p>\n<p>Though the numbers indicate that almost 60% of active Android devices are running <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/the-first-thing-you-should-do-after-upgrading-to-android-14\/\">Android 14<\/a> or newer, about 40% of users haven\u2019t even upgraded to Android 14 or later.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/android-17-suspicious-behavior-intrusion-logging\/\">This Android 17 setting logs suspicious activity on your phone for troubleshooting<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the numbers are staggering, they\u2019re not surprising. Android updates typically lag behind iOS updates. While the iPhone and its software are both designed, controlled, and distributed by Apple, Android updates must roll out from a single starting point to a <a href=\"https:\/\/cloudester.com\/why-android-development-is-hard-compared-to-ios\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wider array of mobile devices and systems<\/a> to reach users. While Google is responsible for the core of the Android system, those updates must then be curated, reviewed, and pushed to every device that uses Android. This includes phones from Google, Samsung, Nothing, and more, which usually requires adaptations from each manufacturer. Apple\u2019s updates are often adopted faster because there\u2019s no middle entity between iOS and the user, while Android\u2019s process is rather <a href=\"https:\/\/www.androidpolice.com\/i-finally-understood-why-samsung-gets-android-updates-so-late-its-googles-fault\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fragmented<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why should you consider upgrading to Android 17<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s always good practice to keep your device updated to the latest available software that your system allows.
