With apps like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/tech\/free-microsoft-word-clone-alternative-linux-wordcraft\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/tech\/free-microsoft-word-clone-alternative-linux-wordcraft\/\">WordCraft<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/tech\/deckcraft-powerpoint-clone-presentation-app-linux-hands-on\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/tech\/deckcraft-powerpoint-clone-presentation-app-linux-hands-on\/\">DeckCraft<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/home-and-office\/artcraft-pdf-editor-adobe-acrobat-clone-hands-on\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/home-and-office\/artcraft-pdf-editor-adobe-acrobat-clone-hands-on\/\">PDFCraft<\/a> now available, those roadblocks go away. Like the other ArtCraft apps, GridCraft runs natively on whatever OS you are using (Linux, FreeBSD, MacOS, or Windows). And because these apps were written in Rust, they are blazingly fast.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve opened very large spreadsheets in GridCraft (one with 1,000 rows), and the app never so much as hiccuped.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"688\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/gridcraft1.jpg?w=864\" alt=\"GridCraft\" class=\"wp-image-1379263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/gridcraft1.jpg 1401w, https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/gridcraft1.jpg?resize=300,201 300w, https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/gridcraft1.jpg?resize=768,516 768w, https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/gridcraft1.jpg?resize=1024,688 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><span class=\"zd-image-credit\">Jack Wallen\/ZDNET<\/span><button type=\"button\" class=\"zd-image-zoom\" data-action=\"enlarge-image\" aria-label=\"Enlarge image: GridCraft\"><\/button><\/figure>\n<p>GridCraft works on more platforms than Excel and is free, which are obvious perks, as is the fact that it\u2019s released under an open license, so anyone can download the code, edit it, rebuild it, and redistribute it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/home-and-office\/work-life\/how-to-use-chatgpt-to-write-excel-formulas\/\">How to use ChatGPT to write Excel formulas<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With GridCraft, you get a standard spreadsheet workflow, native XLSX compatibility, more than 500 calculation functions, charts &amp; pivot tables, agent-native automation, and copy-on-write workbooks with instant undo snapshots, incremental recalculation, and a virtualized grid.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve tested GridCraft on Linux, MacOS, and Windows, and it performs exactly the same and as fast on every platform. So if you\u2019re accustomed to MS Excel\u2019s draggy performance, you\u2019ll be pleasantly surprised with how fast GridCraft does everything. Click on the launcher, and it opens immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Once opened, you can start creating your own spreadsheet from scratch. Although there are three samples (Household Budget, Quarterly Sales Dashboard, and Gradebook), the templates are lacking. You can always create your own templates or download some from the official <a href=\"https:\/\/m365.cloud.microsoft\/create\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MS Template download site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that if there\u2019s one aspect of GridCraft that differs from Excel, it\u2019s templates. I\u2019ve yet to find a way to save a spreadsheet as an .xltx (template) file. Hopefully, the developers will add a more robust template feature in the future. In the meantime, you can always save a spreadsheet as a CSV file into a templates folder you create. It\u2019s a hack, but it works.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How well does GridCraft perform?<\/h2>\n<p>As I said, GridCraft is not exactly a 1:1 drop-in replacement for Excel. Even so, it\u2019s pretty close and works as you would expect. It offers the same features, the same UI (minus the MS branding), and does the same calculations. Because of that, I would suggest always making a copy of your work and using the copy on GridCraft. No matter how well GridCraft performs, do not go into the app thinking it is production-ready.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/home-and-office\/work-life\/how-i-made-this-great-looking-table-in-excel\/\">How I made this great-looking table in Excel<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because spreadsheets can sometimes be the heart of your business or project, you always want to make sure you have a copy of your data. I would say that for any application you use.<\/p>\n<p>Will I be using it for spreadsheets? You bet I will. In fact, I\u2019ve begun adopting all of the ArtCraft apps to replace other, similar apps I use.
