But if you aren&#8217;t using it regularly, you probably don&#8217;t want to <span class=\"c-commerceLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-365\/buy\/compare-all-microsoft-365-products\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><span>pay the $100+ a year<\/span><!----><\/a><\/span> for a subscription.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, there are a few ways to access Microsoft 365 apps totally free. Yes, there are caveats &#8212; but for most people, they won&#8217;t matter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here are three ways to use Microsoft 365 for free.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/winhance-free-optimize-customize-windows\/\">I tried this free Windows cleanup tool to see if it&#8217;d speed up my PC &#8211; and it worked<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>1. Go to Office.com (and stay connected to the internet)&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"c-shortcodeImage u-clearfix c-shortcodeImage-large\">\n<div class=\"c-shortcodeImage_imageContainer\">\n<div class=\"c-shortcodeImage_image\"><picture class=\"c-cmsImage\"><!----> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/how-to-get-microsoft-365-free\/\" alt=\"Microsoft Word desktop\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" fetchpriority=\"low\"><\/picture><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption> <span class=\"c-shortcodeImage_credit g-outer-spacing-top-xsmall u-block\">Alison DeNisco Rayome\/ZDNET<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Microsoft allows free access to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in your internet browser, so long as you sign up for a free Microsoft account. Here&#8217;s how you do it:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. <\/strong>Go to <span class=\"c-commerceLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.office.com\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Office.com<\/span><!----><\/a><\/span>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. <\/strong>Click Sign In. If you don&#8217;t have an account, click Create One.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> Enter your email address, and go through the verification process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> Enter your country, birth date, and name.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s it! You can now sign in and open Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, Teams, or OneNote from the side panel. You just need to be working while connected to the internet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you want to use more advanced features, including Copilot Chat, you&#8217;ll need to pay for the subscription. But if you&#8217;re just looking to work in a Word doc, this should be all you need. You can still create, save, and download files as needed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/critical-windows-defender-settings-off-by-defaullt-how-to-enable\/\">These 5 critical Windows Defender settings are off by default &#8211; turn them on ASAP<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The free version comes with 5GB of OneDrive storage, but that should be plenty if you aren&#8217;t using it often, or can download and then delete files as you go.<\/p>\n<h2>2. (It used to be called the Office app, and it&#8217;s now the Microsoft 365 Copilot app.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. <\/strong>On your phone, open the App Store (on iOS) or the Google Play Store (on Android).<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. <\/strong>Search for Microsoft 365 Copilot. It looks like this.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> Hit download.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. <\/strong>Sign in (you&#8217;ll need a free Microsoft account, which you can create there by pushing Create).<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> The first time you sign in, you&#8217;ll be prompted to upgrade to a paid account, but you can keep pushing &#8220;Try later.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong> You&#8217;ll find your existing documents under &#8220;Search.&#8221; You can open and view them in this app, but if you want to continue editing, you&#8217;ll need to download the individual apps for Word, Excel, etc., which are also free.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Take advantage of the student and teacher program<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;Teachers and students with an eligible school email address can <span class=\"c-commerceLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/go.microsoft.com\/fwlink\/?linkid=2283200\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><span>get Office 365 A1 for free<\/span><!----><\/a><\/span>, and use it as long as they work at or are enrolled in a qualified school.
