We are working quickly to understand the extent of the incident and actively taking steps to minimize its impact,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p> Numerous posts report that attempts to log into Canvas earlier this week failed, but did produce a notice from an entity claiming to be the notorious hacking crew ShinyHunters, who claimed the outage was only possible due to lax patching.<\/p>\n<p>The crew also claimed to have stolen data from institutions that use Canvas and threatened to leak it unless a &#8220;settlement&#8221; is reached by May 12.<\/p>\n<div data-element-guid=\"afe083ca-6701-48e9-9bd8-f8827dd7fb42\" class=\"lab4 column articleList layout_vertical imageLayout_left small-12 large-12 small-abs-12 large-abs-12 abs_grid_12 grid-vas-start mobile-grid-vas-start\">\n<div class=\"content border_width_0 border_width_mobile_0 border-radius-48 border-radius-mobile_48\">\n<h2 class=\"article-list-title t19 font-RobotoCondensed\">MORE CONTEXT<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p> Canvas has thousands of customers, meaning any confirmed breach could have wide impact. <\/p>\n<p> As of Thursday evening US time, Canvas says its wares are now available &#8220;for most users&#8221; and won&#8217;t offer further comment.<\/p>\n<p>A student of <span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">The Register&#8217;s<\/span> acquaintance \u2013 OK, one of my kids \u2013 shared an email advising that his uni has prevented access to Canvas while it tries to understand the situation and the risk of data leakage.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve seen multiple universities posting notices about the incident that say more or less the same thing. Most also warn students of heightened phishing risk and urge caution.<\/p>\n<p>Several also advise that as they require students to lodge assignments in Canvas, students can assume they have an extension on deadlines.<\/p>\n<p>Your correspondent&#8217;s offspring does not mind this one little bit.<\/p>\n<p>This is an evolving story.&nbsp;<span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic
