for human, machine, and AI agent identities, CrowdStrike President Michael Sentonas <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdstrike.com\/en-us\/blog\/crowdstrike-to-acquire-sgnl\/\">wrote<\/a> in Thursday blog post.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As the agentic workforce expands and non-human identities multiply, organizations must ensure they only provide identities with the privileges needed to operate for the amount of time required,&#8221; the critical question of &#8216;what can you do?&#8217; versus just &#8216;who are you?&#8217; &#8211; remained fundamentally broken,&#8221; Kriz continued. &#8220;Every enterprise struggled with the same challenge: managing access in real-time based on context, not just identity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So Kriz and fellow ex-Googler Erik Gustavson founded the company in 2021 to help it provide this type of contextual authorization to customers. The company had raised $42 million from investors, according to Pitchbook, including a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/sgnl.ai\/2025\/02\/series-a-release\/\">$30 million funding round<\/a> in February.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">How to secure machine identities?<\/h3>\n<p>Industry analysts told <em>El Reg<\/em> it&#8217;s a smart \u2013 albeit pricey \u2013 addition to CrowdStrike&#8217;s security stack.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;SGNL&#8217;s ability to correlate identity data, business context, and security posture across human and non-human identities helps enterprises today and provides a great foundation to improve identity security for AI agents,&#8221; Omdia principal analyst Todd Thiemann told us.<\/p>\n<p>Last year saw organizations battle a wave of identity-based attacks ranging from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2025\/10\/16\/ai_makes_phishing_45x_more_effective\/\">traditional phishing<\/a> to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2025\/08\/21\/impersonation_as_a_service\/\">Scattered Spider-style<\/a> social engineering scams to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2025\/08\/27\/storm0501_ransomware_azure_teams\/\">ransomware gangs targeting non-human identities<\/a> that have access to sensitive cloud resources.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33aWA1Tn5P6PQFz1W5iBL8-wAAAQE&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33aWA1Tn5P6PQFz1W5iBL8-wAAAQE&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Microsoft said <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn-dynmedia-1.microsoft.com\/is\/content\/microsoftcorp\/microsoft\/bade\/documents\/products-and-services\/en-us\/security\/Microsoft-Digital-Defense-Report-2025.pdf\">identity-based attacks rose by 32 percent<\/a> in the first half of 2025, and Cisco-owned Duo <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2025\/08\/27\/ciscos_duo_identity_crisis\/\">declared an &#8220;identity crisis&#8221;<\/a> amidst <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2025\/04\/23\/stolen_credentials_mandiant\/\">rising login attacks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote\" readability=\"6\">\n<p>Identity remains the most targeted attack surface and one of the most scalable enforcement points for customers<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Identity remains the most targeted attack surface and one of the most scalable enforcement points for customers,&#8221; Dell&#8217;Oro Group senior director Mauricio Sanchez told <em>The Register<\/em>. He attributes this to the convergence of human and machine identities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Buyers want continuous evaluation of users and privileges because tokens and sessions can be compromised even when authentication looks correct,&#8221; Sanchez said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, &#8220;non-human identities &#8211; workloads, service accounts, certificates &#8211; are proliferating and often carry high privilege,&#8221; he added. &#8220;In a zero-trust model among machines, machine identity is foundational. If you cannot strongly identify a workload, you cannot reliably authorize it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>CrowdStrike&#8217;s planned SGNL purchase is &#8220;a clear signal that identity is becoming a first-class control plane inside major security platforms,&#8221; Sanchez said. &#8220;CrowdStrike is effectively saying: security vendors want to be in the path of access, not only in the path of detection. The strategic value is tighter linkage between risk signals and real-time authorization across SaaS, cloud, and APIs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It also &#8220;validates the growing importance of SSF in the agentic AI era,&#8221; Forrester VP and research director Merritt Maxim said.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">Shared Signals Framework for agentic AI security<\/h3>\n<p>Maxim is referring to the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/openid.net\/wg\/sharedsignals\/\">Shared Signals Framework<\/a> (SSF), an OpenID Foundation standard that aims to make it easy for security tools from disparate vendors to share risk signals in real time. This, in turn, should improve companies&#8217; risk-based authentication, and speed up their threat detection and response.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;SGNL brings authorization capabilities based on dynamic signals (aka SSF) and real-time authorization which are important for enforcing zero standing privilege and the context-based controls needed for agentic AI,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;The $750 million purchase price is a high price for an emerging startup, but reflects CrowdStrike&#8217;s optimism in the growth opportunity for identity security going forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The deal &#8220;enables Crowdstrike to extend their reach into identity security and will help them execute on their vision for next-gen PIM [privileged identity management] and building out their AI security capabilities,&#8221; Maxim added.<\/p>\n<p>The SGNL deal is CrowdStrike&#8217;s second AI security acquisition in two years. In September, the security firm announced <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdstrike.com\/en-us\/press-releases\/crowdstrike-to-acquire-pangea-to-secure-every-layer-of-enterprise-ai\/\">plans to buy<\/a> Pangea, which attempts to make AI more secure by stopping risky use, securing AI agents, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>Crowdstrike isn&#8217;t the only big security vendor to add identity security to its stack: The deal &#8220;echoes <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2025\/07\/30\/palo_alto_networks_inks_25b\/\">Palo Alto Networks&#8217; acquisition<\/a> last year of CyberArk&#8217;s identity security-related assets and directionally reinforces that identity security is no longer optional plumbing,&#8221; Sanchez said. &#8220;It&#8217;s increasingly the battleground for platform differentiation.&#8221; \u00ae<\/p>\n<p> READ MORE <a href=\"https:\/\/go.theregister.com\/feed\/www.theregister.com\/2026\/01\/08\/crowdstrikes_740m_sgnl_deal_proves\/\">HERE<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Authentication is basically solved.
