launch came within 200 meters of hitting a Starlink satellite.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few days ago, 9 satellites were deployed from a launch from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Northwestern China,\u201d Michael Nicolls, a vice president of Starlink engineering at SpaceX <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/michaelnicollsx\/status\/1999630601046097947\">wrote<\/a> on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs far as we know, no coordination or deconfliction with existing satellites operating in space was performed, resulting in a 200 meter close approach between one of the \u201cThis needs to change.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">Drugs in ink cartridges<\/h3>\n<p>Australia\u2019s Border Force last week <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abf.gov.au\/newsroom-subsite\/Pages\/Sydney-man-charged-over-drug-importations-through-postal-system.aspx\">revealed<\/a> the arrest and charging of a man accused of importing heroin and cocaine in air cargo packages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe illicit drugs were concealed in consignments labelled as mashed potato packets, ink cartridges and coffee machine parts,\u201d Border Force wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The agency arrested the suspect on December 9th and seized a mobile phone that, after forensic investigation, was found to run an encrypted messaging application in which the man discussed delivery of consignments to locations around Sydney.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">Big tech to spend $50 billion in India<\/h3>\n<p>India last week attracted over $50 billion in AI investment from Microsoft and Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>On December 9th, Microsoft <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/source\/asia\/2025\/12\/09\/microsoft-invests-us17-5-billion-in-india-to-drive-ai-diffusion-at-population-scale\/\">announced<\/a> a plan to spend $17.5 billion in three other Azure regions across India. The company apologized for the incident and promised to \u201csignificantly enhance our information security to prevent recurrences and will do everything we can do to recover trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">Free speech protestors claim Vultr binned their website<\/h3>\n<p>Anti-censorship organization GreatFire.org, which monitors and protests China\u2019s Great Firewall, has accused web hosting business Vultr of deplatforming it.<\/p>\n<p>One of GreatFire\u2019s activities is a site called FreeWeChat.com where it posts content it claims Chinese authorities removed from WeChat, the social network run by Chinese web giant Tencent.<\/p>\n<p>GreatFire has previously <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2025\/07\/11\/greatfire_alleges_tencent_legal_attack\/\">claimed<\/a> that Tencent engaged Singapore-based infosec company Group-IB to lodge complaints of trademark and copyright infringement, cybersquatting, and unfair competition, in the hope of shuttering FreeWeChat.com.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, GreatFire <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/en.greatfire.org\/blog\/2025\/dec\/tencent-enlisting-american-cloud-hosting-providers-enforce-censorship\">claimed<\/a> that one organization Group-IB targeted on behalf of Tencent is US-based cloud operator Vultr.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter months of behind the scenes negotiations and requests for transparency, on November 28, 2025, with many of our questions still left unanswered, Vultr closed GreatFire&#8217;s account at Tencent\u2019s request,\u201d GreatFire\u2019s post claims. \u201cIn doing so, Vultr acted as Tencent\u2019s vehicle to extend Chinese censorship well beyond the borders of China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i>The Register<\/i> sought comment from Group-IB and Vultr, but has not received a response at the time of writing.<\/p>\n<p>GreatFire argues that FreeWeChat.com does not abuse Tencent\u2019s trademarks or copyright and attacks on the site are acts of censorship.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">AI is a divine gift<\/h3>\n<p>The Federation of Asian Bishops\u2019 Conferences last week staged an event titled \u201cArtificial Intelligence and Pastoral Challenges in Asia\u201d at which Hong Kong\u2019s Cardinal Stephen Chow used his homily to state \u201cI think AI is not from the devil.
