I&#8217;ve always loved a big display on a tablet, but I underestimated just how convenient a compact iPad would be in my daily life. I&#8217;ve taken the iPad Mini 7 everywhere the past month, able to slip the 8.3-inch device into my purse without it weighing down &#8212; or sticking out of &#8212; my bag.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-bestListDeals u-flexbox u-flexbox-column u-flexbox-alignCenter g-inner-spacing-top-xlarge g-inner-spacing-bottom-xlarge\" readability=\"3.2189349112426\">\n<h3 class=\"c-bestListDeals_hed u-text-center\">Best tablet deals of the week<\/h3>\n<p>Deals are selected by the CNET Group commerce team, and may be unrelated to this article.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As a result, I&#8217;ve used the iPad Mini in different situations where I&#8217;ve found myself looking for entertainment, including during long medical infusions that required me to sit in a chair for nearly five hours.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/i-replaced-my-macbook-pro-with-the-m3-ipad-air-and-i-might-never-go-back\/\">I replaced my MacBook Pro with the M3 iPad Air &#8211; and I might never go back<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, that&#8217;s where the iPad Mini 7 hits its limits: entertainment. This small tablet isn&#8217;t a power user&#8217;s dream or a remote worker&#8217;s take-anywhere solution. Truthfully, it&#8217;s easier to work on my cheaper <span class=\"c-commerceLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cc.zdnet.com\/v1\/otc\/00hQi47eqnEWQ6T9d4QLBUc?merchant=05kie42h3YvHwjr4G1w80Qq&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FApple-2022-10-9-inch-iPad-Wi-Fi%2Fdp%2FB0BJLCWFNM&amp;app_deeplink=1\" rel=\"noopener nofollow sponsored\" target=\"_blank\" data-aps-asc-tag=\"zd-buy-button-20\" data-aps-asc-subtag=\"__COM_CLICK_ID__|null|dtp\"><span>iPad 10th Generation<\/span><!----><\/a><\/span> than on the $500 iPad Mini 7, so it&#8217;s hard to justify the price for a tablet that&#8217;s mostly good for playing games and consuming media.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!----><\/p>\n<p>The iPad 10th Generation&#8217;s larger screen gives me more real estate to edit photos and videos, and there are many reputable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/best-ipad-keyboard-case\/\">keyboard options<\/a> for writing and editing documents. However, the iPad 10th Generation doesn&#8217;t support the <span class=\"c-commerceLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cc.zdnet.com\/v1\/otc\/00hQi47eqnEWQ6T9d4QLBUc?merchant=07ceq7iAfFfRlRYt8DCvPYM&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bestbuy.com%2Fsite%2Fapple-pencil-pro-white%2F6535042.p%3FskuId%3D6535042\" rel=\"noopener nofollow sponsored\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Apple Pencil Pro<\/span><!----><\/a><\/span> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/what-is-apple-intelligence-everything-to-know-about-ai-features-coming-to-iphones-macs-and-ipads\/\">Apple Intelligence<\/a>, which the iPad Mini 7 does.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"c-shortcodeImage u-clearfix c-shortcodeImage-large c-shortcodeImage-hasCaption\">\n<div class=\"c-shortcodeImage_imageContainer\">\n<div class=\"c-shortcodeImage_image\"><picture class=\"c-cmsImage\"><!----> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/why-i-recommend-the-ipad-mini-over-pricier-models-especially-at-150-off-now\/\" alt=\"iPad Mini 7\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" fetchpriority=\"low\"><\/picture><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption>\n<div class=\"c-shortcodeImage_caption g-inner-spacing-right-small g-color-black\" readability=\"6.5\">\n<div class=\"c-ShortcodeContent\" readability=\"33\">\n<p>The iPad Calculator&#8217;s Math Notes will make calculations for you and tell you when you make a mistake (in red).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p> <span class=\"c-shortcodeImage_credit g-outer-spacing-top-xsmall u-block\">Maria Diaz\/ZDNET<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The iPad Mini 7 features the A17 Pro chip, the same processor found in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/iphone-15-pro-review\/\">iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max<\/a>, and is also compatible with Apple Intelligence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I tried Apple Intelligence features in the iPad Mini 7 as soon as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/you-can-download-ios-18-1-with-apple-ai-now-heres-how-and-which-iphone-models-support-it\/\">iPadOS 18.1<\/a> was released, and ever since. This software update included Writing Tools, the redesigned Siri, Priority Notifications and Messages, Summarization tools, Smart Reply, and the Clean Up tool in Photos. More updates have added extra tools, like ChatGPT in Siri, and I really like having text conversations with the virtual assistant now.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/ive-tested-every-ipad-sold-by-apple-right-now-heres-the-model-i-recommend-most\/\">I&#8217;ve tested every iPad sold by Apple right now &#8211; here&#8217;s the model I recommend most<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I found more glitches in Apple&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/apple-may-be-cooking-something-big-with-its-new-game-mode-here-are-3-things-we-know\/\">Game Mode<\/a> than I did using Apple Intelligence, but I wasn&#8217;t wowed by the iPad Mini&#8217;s generative AI features. In the iPad Mini&#8217;s defense, the Game Mode glitches appear to be an iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 issue rather than a device-specific issue. I&#8217;ve encountered the same ones in my iPhone 14 Pro Max since updating to iOS 18.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"c-shortcodeImage u-clearfix c-shortcodeImage-large\">\n<div class=\"c-shortcodeImage_imageContainer\">\n<div class=\"c-shortcodeImage_image\"><picture class=\"c-cmsImage\"><!----> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/why-i-recommend-the-ipad-mini-over-pricier-models-especially-at-150-off-now\/\" alt=\"iPad Mini 7 (2024)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" fetchpriority=\"low\"><\/picture><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption> <span class=\"c-shortcodeImage_credit g-outer-spacing-top-xsmall u-block\">Maria Diaz\/ZDNET<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As someone who uses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/what-is-chatgpt-the-worlds-most-popular-ai-chatbot-explained\/\">ChatGPT<\/a> and other generative AI tools daily, I find that Apple Intelligence features need to be more polished and further developed. This isn&#8217;t all that surprising since Apple has notoriously fallen behind in the AI race, but I, like many other Apple users, was hoping for more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/best-small-tablet\/\">The best small tablets of 2025: Expert tested and reviewed<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For this reason, I would not recommend buying an iPad Mini 7 simply because of the AI features. But I recommend it to someone looking for a future-proofed entertainment tablet that can go almost anywhere. And I do like that I can generate emojis and images with AI and then use them in my iPhone 14 Pro Max, which doesn&#8217;t support Apple Intelligence.<\/p>\n<h2>ZDNET&#8217;s buying advice<\/h2>\n<p>The <span class=\"c-commerceLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cc.zdnet.com\/v1\/otc\/00hQi47eqnEWQ6T9d4QLBUc?merchant=05kie42h3YvHwjr4G1w80Qq&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FApple-iPad-Mini-A17-Pro%2Fdp%2FB0DK3YF38G&amp;app_deeplink=1\" rel=\"noopener nofollow sponsored\" target=\"_blank\" data-aps-asc-tag=\"zd-buy-button-20\" data-aps-asc-subtag=\"__COM_CLICK_ID__|null|dtp\"><span>iPad Mini 7<\/span><!----><\/a><\/span> is compact and fast, and its Apple silicon processor is built to last for years. It&#8217;s an excellent companion tablet for Apple users looking for a device to go with them. While Apple promises a great generative AI toolset, the company currently has a lot of balls in the air. If you&#8217;re on the fence, buy the iPad Mini 7 for the entertainment tablet it is, and not what Apple promises it could be.
