Similar to the search advertising industry, AI vendors argue that models can do more when they have access to our data and applications, at least in the context of chatbots and agents. But giving AI models access to personal info magnifies the privacy and security risks.<\/p>\n<p>The incident recalls how payment service Venmo once made user transactions public by default, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2019\/06\/17\/venmo_public_transaction_data\/\">until legal action forced a policy change<\/a>. At the time, the company said shared links &#8220;are not indexed by search engines.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the documentation <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/help.openai.com\/en\/articles\/7925741-chatgpt-shared-links-faq\">changed<\/a> to: &#8220;You can choose to share the article through the link or make it available to be indexed by search engines.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We note that the use of the term &#8220;article,&#8221; something normally associated with human authorship, is applied to the combination of user prompt and machine response, as if the two were interchangeable.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request to clarify when that occurred.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_software\/aiml&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33aI2ldjNDlyTUTylQSrQ7KQAAAFQ&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_software\/aiml&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33aI2ldjNDlyTUTylQSrQ7KQAAAFQ&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>OpenAI&#8217;s search scrubbing effort appears to be underway but incomplete. Google Search with the <code>site:<\/code> operator for chatgpt.com\/share no longer returns a list of shared, indexed chats. Bing Search returned <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/search?q=site%3achatgpt.com%2fshare&amp;FPIG=482853039DE74AF3B306C4E6876F8E64&amp;first=2&amp;FORM=PERE\">thousands of results<\/a>. DuckDuckGo <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/duckduckgo.com\/?t=h_&amp;q=site%3Achatgpt.com%2Fshare&amp;ia=web\">also returned many<\/a>. So did <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/search.brave.com\/search?q=site%3Achatgpt.com%2Fshare&amp;source=web\">Brave Search<\/a>. We saw personal information in many of these results.<\/p>\n<p>The search result chat purge is limited in scope, however. In June 2025, OpenAI <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/response-to-nyt-data-demands\/\">said<\/a> that it faces a legal demand from a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/11\/21\/new_york_times_lawyers_openai\/\">New York Times copyright claim<\/a> to retain consumer ChatGPT and API customer data indefinitely. The AI biz said it&#8217;s fighting that demand because it &#8220;fundamentally conflicts with the privacy commitments we have made to our users.&#8221; \u00ae<\/p>\n<p> READ MORE <a
