of 1.4M customers caught in Allianz Life data heist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Financial services biz Allianz says the majority of customers of one of its North American subsidiaries had their data stolen in a cyberattack.<\/p>\n<p>Lawyers acting on behalf of US-based Allianz Life filed a breach notification with Maine&#8217;s attorney general on Saturday, saying the intrusion began on July 16 and was detected a day later.<\/p>\n<p>Official filings did not state how many people were affected, or what data was compromised, although in a statement to <em>The Register<\/em>, Allianz said the majority of its 1.4 million customers were impacted.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"condor\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,dmpu,\" confirm the vendor supplying that system.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We took immediate action to contain and mitigate the issue and notified the FBI,&#8221; the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n<div system.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our investigation is ongoing, and we began the process of reaching out to individuals impacted with dedicated resources to assist them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Allianz also did not alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Scattered Spider, the loosely connected group of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2025\/07\/10\/nca_arrests_four_in_connection\/\">young people<\/a> accused of carrying out attacks on a litany of major organizations this year, was said to be <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2025\/06\/16\/scattered_spider_targets_insurance_firms\/\">targeting the insurance sector<\/a> just weeks ago, before <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2025\/06\/30\/scattered_spider_aviation\/\">diversifying to aviation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the group recently targeting the insurance industry, no credible source has linked it to the Allianz attack.<\/p>\n<p>Another outfit with an established interest in targeting cloud-based CRM systems is ShinyHunters, of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/06\/24\/snowflake_breach_accelerating_into_snowball\/\">Snowflake<\/a> infamy and more recently <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2025\/07\/24\/eau_no_dior_tells_customers\/\">Dior<\/a> (allegedly).<\/p>\n<p>Google&#8217;s Threat Intelligence Group last month <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/blog\/topics\/threat-intelligence\/voice-phishing-data-extortion\" rel=\"nofollow\">issued a warning<\/a> to the security industry about a group it tracks as UNC6040 extorting victims of Salesforce attacks while claiming to be from the ShinyHunters group.<\/p>\n<p>Attacks on customers CRM applications, which were also said to involve a social engineering component, stole data then used it as leverage in extortion attempts.<\/p>\n<p>As for Allianz, it refused to comment on whether it was being extorted by cybercriminals, ShinyHunters or otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>Its filing with Maine&#8217;s AG stated customers are to be offered 24 months&#8217; worth of identity protection and credit monitoring services. \u00ae<\/p>\n<p> READ MORE <a
