XR is a blanket term that encompasses virtual reality (VR), where computer-generated images are projected on the user&#8217;s field of vision, blocking out the real world, and augmented reality (AR), where the images are superimposed over the real world.<\/p>\n<p>Meta&#8217;s Reality Labs lost $4.2 billion in Q1 2025 and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/30\/metas-reality-labs-posts-4point2-billion-loss-in-first-quarter.html\">has flushed away similar sums<\/a> \u2013 between $1.83 billion and $4.97 billion \u2013 every quarter since Q4 2020 when Reality Labs <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2020\/08\/introducing-the-new-facebook-reality-labs\/\">was formed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/publicsector&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44aDyYOuBb3QddNN4bcZbLDgAAABI&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/publicsector&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44aDyYOuBb3QddNN4bcZbLDgAAABI&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>According to the Financial Times, Meta has invested $80 billion in various flavors of reality \u2013 virtual, augmented, mixed, and extended \u2013 since its 2014 Oculus acquisition, and is expected to spend another $20 billion by the end of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the US military, with a proposed budget that tops <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iiss.org\/online-analysis\/military-balance\/2025\/05\/president-trumps-fy2026-defence-budget-continuing-priorities-new-missions\/\">$1 trillion this year<\/a>, will help generate some return on that investment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Meta has spent the last decade building AI and AR to enable the computing platform of the future,&#8221; said Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Meta, in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anduril.com\/article\/anduril-and-meta-team-up-to-transform-xr-for-the-american-military\/\">a statement<\/a>. &#8220;We&#8217;re proud to partner with Anduril to help bring these technologies to the American servicemembers that protect our interests at home and abroad.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The business of head-mounted tech appliances has proven to be a tough one. In 2014, Google gambled that Google Glass would appeal to people with its cyborg-chic and managed to spawn the term Glasshole before the consumer and enterprise versions were cancelled in 2015 and 2023 respectively.<\/p>\n<div class=\"promo_article\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2025\/02\/12\/handout_us_army_hololens_scaled.jpg?x=174&amp;amp;y=115&amp;amp;crop=1\" width=\"174\" height=\"115\" alt=\"Soldiers test new IVAS technology, capabilities with hand-on exercises\"><\/p>\n<h2 title=\"Will the Pentagon get Luckey with a new IVAS vendor?\">Microsoft wants to quit building Army VR goggles, hand contract to Anduril<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2025\/02\/12\/microsoft_gives_up_army_ivas\/\"><span>READ MORE<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Microsoft&#8217;s HoloLens enjoyed a slightly longer market arc, starting in 2015 until it was <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/techcommunity.microsoft.com\/blog\/themixedrealityblog\/windows-holographic-final-feature-release\/4275961\">discontinued<\/a> in late 2024. Apple <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2025\/05\/21\/apple-smart-glasses-everything-we-know-so-far\/\">is said<\/a> to be developing smart glasses, or gla$$e$ per the company&#8217;s preferred margins. And Microsoft at least has thought about smart glasses, having <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.windowslatest.com\/2024\/07\/28\/patent-hints-at-microsofts-plans-for-windows-powered-ar-glasses-with-advanced-camera\/\">filed relevant patents in 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Apple, Google, and Microsoft perhaps have noted that the face-computing space isn&#8217;t entirely moribund: Ray-Ban Meta glasses sold 2 million units from their October 2023 launch through the end of 2024, according to RayBan parent <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/s21.q4cdn.com\/399680738\/files\/doc_financials\/2025\/q1\/Transcripts\/META-Q1-2025-Earnings-Call-Transcript-1.pdf\">EssilorLuxottica<\/a> [PDF].<\/p>\n<p>Anduril and Meta anticipate that their tie-up will allow the companies to benefit from their mutual competencies in software, hardware, and artificial intelligence to produce tools that warfighters will find useful.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The world is entering a new era of computing that will give people access to limitless intelligence and extend their senses and perception in ways that have never been possible before,\u201d said Meta CEO Andrew Bosworth in a statement. &#8220;Our national security benefits enormously from American industry bringing these technologies to life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The companies expect to deliver mixed reality capabilities through Anduril&#8217;s Lattice platform, a command-and-control system that integrates AI to surface real-time battlefield intelligence via AR\/VR interfaces. The idea is to put useful data within soldiers&#8217; fields of views to facilitate better decision-making in combat scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>Luckey, for his part, sounds as if he bears no ill-will toward his former employer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am glad to be working with Meta once again,&#8221; he said in a statement. &#8220;Of all the areas where dual-use technology can make a difference for America, this is the one I am most excited about.
