{"id":5872,"date":"2018-07-10T18:22:00","date_gmt":"2018-07-10T18:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/034cc0bc-4e72-4f8e-abb0-c10957d43b7d"},"modified":"2018-07-10T18:22:00","modified_gmt":"2018-07-10T18:22:00","slug":"apple-fixes-iphone-crash-bug-whenever-taiwan-was-mentioned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/apple-fixes-iphone-crash-bug-whenever-taiwan-was-mentioned\/","title":{"rendered":"Apple fixes iPhone crash bug whenever Taiwan was mentioned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"img aspect-set\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet1.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2018\/07\/10\/d86923c3-eba9-4ac4-aa92-4643450faaac\/resize\/770xauto\/3e6ecbac0988df576d7c648baca82870\/img2939.jpg\" class=\"\" alt=\"\" height=\"auto\" width=\"770\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caption\">(Image: ZDNet)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Apple has fixed a bug that could remotely crash some iPhones.<\/p>\n<p>The bug caused a crash &#8212; known as a denial-of-service &#8212; when the word &#8220;Taiwan&#8221; or the Taiwanese flag was mentioned or displayed in any app.<\/p>\n<p>The technology giant <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT208938\">confirmed the fix<\/a> in a security update Monday, after the release of iOS 11.4.1, crediting security researcher Patrick Wardle for the discovery.<\/p>\n<p>Wardle, chief research officer at <a href=\"https:\/\/digitasecurity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Digita Security<\/a>, released details of the bug <a href=\"https:\/\/objective-see.com\/blog\/blog_0x34.html\">on his blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He recounted how a friend of his was unable to type &#8220;Taiwan&#8221; in her phone for two years without a particular app crashing. After analyzing the crash data, Wardle found the device would crash because of a memory error in how the operating system processes and removes certain emojis when a device&#8217;s region is not correctly set.<\/p>\n<p>In doing so, it would return a &#8220;null&#8221; value, which caused the crash.<\/p>\n<p>In case you didn&#8217;t know, Apple removes certain emojis at China&#8217;s request. In the case of Taiwan, China&#8217;s relationship with the territory is fraught at best. China claims the country as its territory, but Taiwan claims it has the right to self-govern. China, as it often does, responded with censorship. It&#8217;s believed that Apple <a href=\"https:\/\/forums.macrumors.com\/threads\/apple-censors-taiwan-flag-on-iphones-in-china.2034425\/\">removed the Taiwanese flag emoji<\/a> from Chinese-language iPhones as if the country doesn&#8217;t exist.<\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_ZD_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\">\n<\/section>\n<p>Anyone with that language setting wouldn&#8217;t see the emoji but would instead see a square with a cross through it.<\/p>\n<p>Simply switching the region back again would fix the issue.
