investigation into alleged censorship conducted by the USA\u2019s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, aka CISA, plus revocation of any security clearances held by the agency&#8217;s ex-head Chris Krebs and anyone else at SentinelOne, the cybersecurity company where he now works.<\/p>\n<p>Krebs was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2020\/11\/18\/trump_fires_krebs\/\" rel=\"noopener\">fired by Trump<\/a> in 2020 after the CISA boss indicated, correctly, the 2020 election was won by Joe Biden fair and square <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2020\/11\/13\/us_election_security_fears_doused\/\" rel=\"noopener\">without any outside interference<\/a>, and that Trump lost.<\/p>\n<p>The White House outlined its crackdown this week on Krebs in a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/04\/addressing-risks-from-chris-krebs-and-government-censorship\/\">presidential memorandum<\/a> that accused him of using CISA to pursue a \u201cpartisan mission\u201d that saw him direct the agency to work with social media companies to censor \u201cdisfavored speech\u201d online on matters such as the contents of a laptop belonging to Biden&#8217;s son Hunter that allegedly containing evidence of corruption and proof that \u201cthe 2020 election was rigged and stolen.\u201d<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The President directed the Attorney General and the Secretary of Homeland Security to review Krebs\u2019 activities as head of CISA, and in any other government roles, and demanded \u201ca comprehensive evaluation of all of CISA\u2019s activities over the last six years\u201d focused on any instances in which the org suppressed free speech.<\/p>\n<p>The proclaimation also ordered Krebs\u2019 security clearance be cancelled, if he has any, along with any held by staff at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/search.theregister.com\/?q=SentinelOne\" rel=\"noopener\">SentinelOne<\/a>, where he currently works. We&#8217;ve asked SentinelOne and Krebs for comment, including any insight to any impact from this revocation order.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">&#8216;I am your retribution&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>The current Trump administration has already cancelled security clearances of many former government officials, usually targeting those who opposed or did not fall in line with the president during his first term as President. It has also attacked law firms whose staff worked on cases that challenged his first administration\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n<p>Those actions are unprecedented and punitive.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/publicsector&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Z_dMOWOzdrdtBRwAmPN65wAAA0A&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/publicsector&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Z_dMOWOzdrdtBRwAmPN65wAAA0A&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>So is revoking Krebs\u2019 security clearance and doing the same to others at SentinelOne \u2013 an organization that had nothing to do with the former CISA leaders action\u2019s while in office.<\/p>\n<p>Some elements of the memo are accurate: The Biden administration did <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/08\/27\/zuckerberg_admits_biden_administration_pressured\/\" rel=\"noopener\">engage<\/a> with social media giants to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/09\/12\/missouri_v_biden_content_moderation\/\" rel=\"noopener\">suggest their moderation policies<\/a> could usefully be revised to consider whether COVID-19 misinformation that could endanger to public health should be allowed to circulate widely. Such practices were later found to be <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/06\/26\/supreme_court_social_media_biden\/\" rel=\"noopener\">legally OK<\/a> and big tech was not required to do anything or threatened with repercussions.<\/p>\n<p>The view that Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop contained evidence that his father, President Joe Biden, knew of his son\u2019s attempts to profit from the family name was indeed not widely reported when the allegations were first raised \u2013 largely because media outlets could not verify the chain of custody for the PC in question and therefore doubted the authenticity of the content it contained.<\/p>\n<p>Other elements of the memo, such as claims that the 2020 election was rigged, have been disproved many times. Because those claims weren&#8217;t at all true.<\/p>\n<p>On the campaign trail, Donald Trump used the phrase \u201cI am your retribution\u201d to describe the actions he intended to take against perceived enemies of his MAGA movement if re-elected President.
