Members included US Vice President JD Vance, Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller.<\/p>\n<p>All have since insisted no rules requiring the preservation of government documents were broken; some of the messages were set to auto-delete. They also claimed the military plans were not classified.<\/p>\n<p>The existence of the group was embarrassing given past Republican opposition to public officials using private communications services. It\u2019s since been <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2025\/04\/02\/waltz_gmail_security\/\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that Waltz routinely uses his personal Gmail account for government business, and has <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/04\/02\/waltzs-team-set-up-at-least-20-signal-group-chats-for-crises-across-the-world-00266845\">established<\/a> up to 20 private government-related Signal groups.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This chat was alleged to have included classified information pertaining to sensitive military actions in Yemen,&#8221; the two senators wrote. &#8220;If true, this reporting raises questions as to the use of unclassified networks to discuss sensitive and classified information, as well as the sharing of such information with those who do not have proper clearance and need to know.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/publicsector&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Z-9XgIfU2iSJQlWBcakVVAAAAkE&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/publicsector&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Z-9XgIfU2iSJQlWBcakVVAAAAkE&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>The IG will conduct his investigation in Washington DC and at US Central Command in Florida, and instructed Secretary Hegseth to assign two points of contact for him &#8211; one a government official, and the other a senior military officer &#8211; within the next five days.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The objective of this evaluation is to determine the extent to which the Secretary of Defense and other DoD personnel complied with DoD policies and procedures for the use of a commercial messaging application for official business,&#8221; the watchdog&#8217;s letter reads.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Additionally, we will review compliance with classification and records retention requirements.
