It&#8217;s a trap &#8211; how to spot the scam<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alongside other big tech companies &#8212; including OpenAI, Google, and Meta &#8212; Anthropic <a href=\"https:\/\/bidenwhitehouse.archives.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2023\/07\/21\/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-secures-voluntary-commitments-from-leading-artificial-intelligence-companies-to-manage-the-risks-posed-by-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"c-regularLink\">joined the voluntary agreement to self-regulate in July 2023<\/a> as part of the Biden administration&#8217;s AI safety initiatives, many of which were later codified in Biden&#8217;s AI executive order. The companies committed to certain standards for security testing models before release, watermarking AI-generated content, and developing data privacy infrastructure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Anthropic later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/news-events\/news\/2024\/08\/us-ai-safety-institute-signs-agreements-regarding-ai-safety-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"c-regularLink\">agreed to work with the AI Safety Institute<\/a>&nbsp;(created under that order), to carry out many of the same priorities. However, the Trump administration will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/us-ai-safety-institute-will-be-gutted-axios-reports\/\">likely dissolve the Institute<\/a>, leaving its initiatives in limbo.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/the-head-of-us-ai-safety-has-stepped-down-what-now\/\">The head of US AI safety has stepped down. What now?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anthropic did not publicly announce the removal of the commitment from its site and maintains that its existing stances on responsible AI are unrelated to or predate Biden-era agreements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The move is the latest in a series of public- and private-sector developments around AI &#8212; many of which impact the future of AI safety and regulation &#8212; under the Trump administration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On his first day in office, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/the-head-of-us-ai-safety-has-stepped-down-what-now\/\">reversed<\/a> Biden&#8217;s executive order and has already&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/trump-axes-ai-staff-and-research-funding-and-scientists-are-worried\/\">fired several AI experts<\/a> within the government and axed some research funding. These changes appear to have kicked off a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/how-new-facebook-policies-incentivize-spreading-misinformation\/\">tonal shift<\/a> in several major AI companies, some of which are taking the opportunity to expand their government contracts and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/open-ai-anthropic-invite-us-scientists-to-experiment-with-frontier-models\/\">work closely with the government<\/a> to shape a still-unclear AI policy under Trump. Companies like Google are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/google-releases-responsible-ai-report-while-removing-its-anti-weapons-pledge\/\">changing already-loose definitions<\/a> of responsible AI, for example.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the government has lost or is slated to lose much of the already-slim AI regulation created under Biden, and companies ostensibly have even fewer external incentives to place checks on their systems or answer to a third party.
