I was on my way home but stopped at Weelde [airfield] because I really had to go to the toilet. There was a flea market next to the airbase. The records were from 2011-2019 and pertain mainly to individuals around the Utrecht, Houten, and Delft regions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That was quite a shock,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I thought &#8216;How could something like this happen&#8217;? My sister or I could easily have been among them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Polet drove back to the flea market after making his discovery and bought the remaining ten hard drives from the same individual. &#8220;Luckily they were still there,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/storage&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Z7XwMudWB_3OAvL82cO0GQAAAVM&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_onprem\/storage&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Z7XwMudWB_3OAvL82cO0GQAAAVM&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>The natural question to ask next is how the data came to be at a flea market, and to what organization did it belong?<\/p>\n<p>Polet only looked at a small portion of the files \u2013 he examined just two of the total 15 disks \u2013 but that was enough to deduce the affected healthcare organization was an unidentified one based in Utrecht.<\/p>\n<p>It told Polet the data originated from Nortade ICT Solutions, which used to be based in Breda before going out of business. An associated website has lapsed, <em>The Reg<\/em> notes. It was an IT company developing software for, you guessed it, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2025\/02\/19\/decadeold_healthcare_security_snafu_settled\/\">healthcare sector<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dutch law mandates that storage devices like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/04\/10\/ai_boom_is_boosting_demand\/\">HDDs<\/a> that contain medical data must be erased by a professional, and the erasure must be certified.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The normal procedure is to have them destroyed by a professional company, but that costs money, and by selling the hard drives off the company would have brought in a small amount of cash,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.malwarebytes.com\/blog\/news\/2025\/02\/hard-drives-containing-sensitive-medical-data-found-in-flea-market\" rel=\"nofollow\">said<\/a> Malwarebytes offering its take on things.<\/p>\n<p>It added there are multiple ways of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/12\/24\/uk_device_data_deletion\/\">securely erasing disk data<\/a>, from overwriting it with random data (single or multiple passes) to invoking the secure erase command in the firmware (where available), all the way to physically chopping up the disk and burning each piece.<\/p>\n<p>Malwarebytes also said individuals should be sure to request their data be erased from public records.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the Dutch case, it&#8217;s remarkable and painful that such a company would have this type of information stored on their drives,&#8221; it said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;First of all, the software provider had no right to store this information. Secondly, even with a legitimate reason to store them, the data should have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/08\/14\/nist_postquantum_standards\/\">encrypted<\/a>, and of course, the hard drives should have been decommissioned responsibly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But even the most vigilant to their personal data protection would be unlikely to request the data be erased since it&#8217;s often used to deliver healthcare services without undue friction. \u00ae<\/p>\n<p> READ MORE <a
