{"id":57968,"date":"2025-01-08T06:31:06","date_gmt":"2025-01-08T06:31:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/akamai-to-quit-its-cdn-in-china-seemingly-not-due-to-trouble-from-beijing\/"},"modified":"2025-01-08T06:31:06","modified_gmt":"2025-01-08T06:31:06","slug":"akamai-to-quit-its-cdn-in-china-seemingly-not-due-to-trouble-from-beijing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/akamai-to-quit-its-cdn-in-china-seemingly-not-due-to-trouble-from-beijing\/","title":{"rendered":"Akamai to quit its CDN in China, seemingly not due to trouble from Beijing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Akamai has decided to end its content delivery network services in China, but not because it\u2019s finding it hard to do business in the Middle Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>News of Akamai\u2019s decision to end CDN services in China emerged in a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/content.akamai.com\/index.php\/email\/emailWebview\">letter<\/a> it recently published and sent to customers and partners that opens by reminding them the company has a \u201ccommitment to providing world-class delivery and security solutions\u201d \u2013 and must therefore inform them that \u201cEffective June 30, 2026, all China CDN services will reach their decommission date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Customers are offered a choice: do nothing and then be moved to an Akamai CDN located outside China, or use similar services from Chinese companies Tencent Cloud and Wangsu Science &amp; Technology. The letter, however, warns that \u201cAll current China CDN customers must complete the transition to our Partners\u2019 solution by June 30, 2026, to maintain uninterrupted service.\u201d So maybe that cutover to offshore services won\u2019t be so easy.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"condor\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>China is a tricky place to do business for foreign companies, who are nearly always required to operate through local partners and can sometimes find authorities asking very pointed questions about how their products and technologies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/policy\/ibm-statement-limited-technology-demonstrations\/?form=MG0AV3\">IBM<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2016\/09\/20\/microsoft_beijing_transparency_office\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft<\/a> have even established centers at which they conduct very detailed demos of their wares to Chinese authorities, ostensibly to reassure them they don\u2019t represent security threats.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Some tech vendors are therefore leery of working in China, as they fear the country\u2019s requirements represent unwelcome risk of IP leakage.<\/p>\n<p>That appears not to be the case for Akamai, which told us that \u201cLike any business, we constantly evaluate our offerings in each market to best address our customers&#8217; needs\u201d and that it remains committed to China.<\/p>\n<p>Akamai also told is it reckons it\u2019s a handy supplier for Chinese companies that operate abroad.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson also pointed us to a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.roic.ai\/quote\/0HBQ.L\/transcripts\/2024\/2\">transcript<\/a> of its August 2024 earnings call, on which CEO and co-founder Tom Leighton stated that the company has \u201ctransformed from a content delivery pioneer into the cloud company that powers and protects life online.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That means compute and security services now generate two thirds of our revenue, and Leighton expressed his belief that those products \u201cprovide Akamai with excellent potential for future growth and profitability.\u201d<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Which leaves content delivery looking rather dull by comparison, and perhaps also hard work given that since Akamai pioneered the market the likes of Cloudflare and AWS have entered the market.<\/p>\n<p>All of which leaves Chinese Akamai CDN users with just under eighteen months to contemplate their next moves, a decent amount to sort themselves out.
