Equinox says it &#8220;immediately&#8221; secured its IT environment, hired a top-notch cyber security firm, and started an investigation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a result of the investigation, Equinox learned that certain files in its network may have been accessed or downloaded without authorization,&#8221; the notification <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.equinoxinc.org\/vs-uploads\/1731531442_Equinox-Website-_-Substitute-Notice-of-Security-Incident-DRAFT119089151.pdf\">reads<\/a> [PDF].<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cybercrime&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Zz4IF-dWB_3OAvL82cOFWQAAAVc&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cybercrime&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Zz4IF-dWB_3OAvL82cOFWQAAAVc&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>By September 16, Equinox had reviewed the possibly stolen files, and &#8220;determined that some individuals&#8217; personal and\/or protected health information may have been affected as a result of this incident.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cue the data breach letters \u2013 and, we&#8217;d guess, lawsuits, since the breach does involve protected health info.<\/p>\n<p>Equinox, not to be confused with businesses of the same name, such as the gym chain, did not respond to <em>The Register<\/em>&#8216;s inquiries about the security breach, including if it was a ransomware infection.<\/p>\n<p>On May 18, the LockBit 3.0 ransomware group <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FalconFeedsio\/status\/1792065146497716389\">listed Equinox<\/a> on its data leak site, claiming to have swiped 49GB of data.<\/p>\n<p>The lowlife group <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/databreaches.net\/2024\/11\/18\/ny-equinox-notifies-clients-and-employees-of-april-data-security-incident\/\">updated<\/a> the listing on August 11, according to DataBreaches.net, and gave the organization until August 25 to respond before eventually leaking 31.8GB of files.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cybercrime&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Zz4IF-dWB_3OAvL82cOFWQAAAVc&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cybercrime&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Zz4IF-dWB_3OAvL82cOFWQAAAVc&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>It&#8217;s worth noting that all of this happened after the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/07\/31\/five_months_after_lockbit\/\" rel=\"noopener\">high-profile disruption<\/a> of LockBit back in February. It just illustrates how difficult it is to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/11\/08\/scattered_spider_blackcat_return\/\" rel=\"noopener\">stop the ransomware scourge<\/a> despite arrests and infrastructure seizures.<\/p>\n<p>As of August, LockBit 3.0 was still the year\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/08\/13\/lockbit_ransomware_stats\/\" rel=\"noopener\">most prolific<\/a> encryption and extortion gang, according to Palo Alto Networks&#8217; Unit 42.
