Encryption ensures the emails I send to specific recipients can only be read by those with a matching key to decrypt the contents of the email.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll need a third-party app for this level of security on Android. For encryption in email, you&#8217;ll require a different email client, as Gmail won&#8217;t cut it. I prefer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/home-and-office\/work-life\/the-new-thunderbird-appointment-tool-is-thoroughly-impressive-and-free\/\">Thunderbird on Android<\/a> because it&#8217;s an outstanding email client, works with PGP (Pretty Good Privacy), and is an open-source application.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/the-thunderbird-email-client-finally-landed-on-android-and-it-was-worth-the-wait\/\"><strong>The Thunderbird email client finally landed on Android, and it was worth the wait<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The app I chose for encryption on Android is <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=org.sufficientlysecure.keychain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"c-regularLink\">OpenKeychain<\/a>. This tool makes it easy to add encryption to Android.<\/p>\n<p>Let me show you how it works.<\/p>\n<h2>Installing OpenKeychain<\/h2>\n<p><strong>What you&#8217;ll need:&nbsp;<\/strong>The only thing you&#8217;ll need is an Android device (phone or tablet) and a valid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/how-to-create-a-passkey-for-your-google-account\/\">Google account<\/a>. That&#8217;s it. Here&#8217;s how.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Open the newly installed app<\/h2>\n<p>Swipe up on your home screen to open the App Drawer. Scroll down until you locate OpenKeychain and tap the launcher.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>2. Create your key<\/h2>\n<p>In the main window, tap Create My Key. You can install Thunderbird for Android from the <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=net.thunderbird.android\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"c-regularLink\">Google Play Store<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Open Thunderbird Settings<\/h2>\n<p>After you&#8217;ve installed Thunderbird and added your email account, tap the menu button in the upper-left corner and then tap the gear icon at the bottom of the sidebar. Navigate to &#8220;End-to-end encryption&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>At the bottom of the &#8220;Account settings&#8221; page, tap &#8220;End-to-end encryption&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Hopefully, at this point, you&#8217;ve imported a PGP key from a recipient that will receive an encrypted email from you. Tap the Compose button and then tap the menu button at the top right (three vertical dots).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>From that menu, tap Enable Encryption. Once you&#8217;ve done that, type the recipient&#8217;s email address (for which you&#8217;ve added the PGP key), and the lock icon should turn green, which means the email is encrypted.
