{"id":57581,"date":"2024-10-29T15:06:36","date_gmt":"2024-10-29T15:06:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/36529\/Five-Eyes-Agencies-Offer-Security-Advice-For-Small-Businesses.html"},"modified":"2024-10-29T15:06:36","modified_gmt":"2024-10-29T15:06:36","slug":"five-eyes-agencies-offer-security-advice-for-small-businesses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/five-eyes-agencies-offer-security-advice-for-small-businesses\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Eyes Agencies Offer Security Advice For Small Businesses"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/files.cyberriskalliance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/070724_warning.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Five of the most prominent intelligence agencies in the world are teaming up to help small businesses (SMBs) become more secure.<\/p>\n<p>The United States intelligence community, along with its counterparts in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand (collectively known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scworld.com\/brief\/new-five-eyes-ai-security-guidelines-unveiled\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Five Eyes<\/a>) issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npsa.gov.uk\/secure-innovation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">set of guidelines<\/a> aimed at helping SMBs shore up some of the more common avenues threat actors use to infiltrate networks.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scworld.com\/brief\/active-directory-attack-guidance-issued-by-five-eyes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the agencies<\/a>, the aim of the guidelines is to help small businesses, particularly those in the technology sector, better guard against hacking attacks from state-sanctioned threat groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophisticated nation-state adversaries, like China are working hard to steal the intellectual property held by some of our countries\u2019 most innovative and exciting startups,\u201d said MI5 Director General Ken McCallum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Five Eyes Secure Innovation advice we\u2019re rolling out today forms part of our response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In general, the guidelines explain a number of best practices companies should adopt around areas such as appointing security managers and maintaining a clear inventory of assets and potential risks.<\/p>\n<p>The guidelines also include advice for managing data on third-party services and managing data access from partners.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to protecting from nation-state threats, the agencies also offer tips on how to guard data from unscrupulous competitors and run-of-the-mill criminal hacking groups that operate without government backing.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the more skeptical readers might point out that the Five Eyes offering security advice betrays a stunning lack of self-awareness on the part of the five intelligence agencies famous for spying on the better part of the free world.<\/p>\n<p>Documents leaked by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scworld.com\/perspective\/snowden-nsa-leaks-should-prompt-fresh-look-at-insider-threat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Edward Snowden<\/a> show that in many cases the Five Eyes were more than happy to exploit poor OpSec in the name of collecting intelligence. It could be said that asking them for security advice is akin to polling wolves on the best way to secure your chickens.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the agencies maintain that they are acting in the best interests of the business community with the belief that by better securing the private sector at home, they will be better able to protect the government sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy joining up with our
