But then Akamai researcher Tomer Peled discovered that attackers could still bypass the patch by sending a malicious theme file and convincing a user to manipulate (but not necessarily open) the file. This would force Windows to send authenticated network requests to remote hosts that contained a user&#8217;s NTLM credentials.<\/p>\n<p>Peled&#8217;s discovery and bug report resulted in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nvd.nist.gov\/vuln\/detail\/CVE-2024-38030\">CVE-2024-38030<\/a>, a similar Windows Themes spoofing security hole that Microsoft <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/en-US\/vulnerability\/CVE-2024-38030\">fixed<\/a> in July.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.akamai.com\/blog\/security-research\/akamai-perspective-on-july-patch-tuesday-2024\">learned about this second flaw<\/a>, we had to fix our patches for CVE-2024-21320 as well,&#8221; Acros Security CEO Mitja Kolsek <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.0patch.com\/2024\/10\/we-patched-cve-2024-38030-found-another.html\">said<\/a> on Tuesday. &#8220;While analyzing the issue, our security researchers decided to look around a bit and found an additional instance of the very same problem that was still present on all fully updated Windows versions, up to currently the latest Windows 11 24H2.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The security firm reported the new zero-day to Microsoft and isn&#8217;t sharing details until Redmond issues a new patch.
