Exceptions to the ban are available in some instances, with approval from department heads.<\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong is technically a part of China \u2013 even if under a &#8220;one country, two systems&#8221; framework. The Middle Kingdom usually differentiates between products made in the West and homegrown ones like Tencent&#8217;s WeChat. It views the latter as more secure, partly because of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/02\/27\/china_data_regulatory_intervention\/\" rel=\"noopener\">a requirement<\/a> to store data domestically.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing likes to nourish homegrown tech while keeping its developers <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/07\/12\/china_attacks_the_fake_news\/\" rel=\"noopener\">under its thumb<\/a>. But this time, China \u2013 or at least its Special Administrative Region \u2013 sees Tencent\u2019s service as a security threat.<\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong&#8217;s legislature is projected to table a new
