By Thursday, reports of problems with security products \u2013 from vendors including CrowdStrike and Microsoft \u2013 had begun to pile up with no explanation from Apple, as first <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/09\/19\/apples-new-macos-sequoia-update-is-breaking-some-cybersecurity-tools\/\">reported<\/a> by TechCrunch.<\/p>\n<p>Objective-See founder and macOS security expert Patrick Wardle <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/patrickwardle\/status\/1836860191888810373\">suggested<\/a> one possible cause for the problems on X: networking bug(s) in Sequoia. The issue seems to be tied to network filters configured in macOS that must be removed before the software will work. Stealth Mode has to be disabled in Firewall settings to resolve the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <em>The Register<\/em>, Wardle told us he&#8217;d heard from some of the larger vendors he&#8217;s spoken to that Apple has acknowledged some unintended changes that it was working on fixing, but said he wasn&#8217;t sure if that meant the issue was at the firewall or lower-level networking components.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft&#8217;s notice on the issue, which advised customers not to upgrade to Sequoia, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/defender-endpoint\/mac-whatsnew\">indicated<\/a> the issue has to do with changes to the network stack in macOS.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33ZvINafCZfr3nulUeS8UrxgAAAQU&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33ZvINafCZfr3nulUeS8UrxgAAAQU&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Either way, the open source developer told us, it&#8217;s something that never should have happened \u2013 and it&#8217;s not the first time, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/apple-macos-ventura-bug-security-tools\/\">either<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you pride yourself on building secure systems, you can&#8217;t push out software that breaks security tools,&#8221; Wardle noted.<\/p>\n<p>Apple hasn&#8217;t responded to questions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"boxout\" readability=\"17.059322033898\">\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">Critical vulnerabilities of the week: You updated HugeGraph, right?<\/h3>\n<p>You may recall in April when Apache disclosed a rather serious CVSS 9.8 vulnerability in HugeGraph, or in June when we <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/06\/07\/poc_apache_hugegraph\/\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a> that proof-of-concept code for the sandbox bypass and RCE vulnerability had been released.<\/p>\n<p>If not, here&#8217;s yet another warning: The vulnerability, tracked as <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cve.org\/CVERecord?id=CVE-2024-27348\">CVE-2024-27348<\/a>, is under active exploitation. It affects Apache HugeGraph-Server versions 1.0.0 all the way up to 1.3.0, which fixes the matter when used with Java 11 and the authentication system enabled. Get patching!<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>CVSS 9.8 \u2013 <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cve.org\/CVERecord?id=CVE-2024-6670\">CVE-2024-6670<\/a>: Network monitoring platform WhatsUp Gold contains an SQL injection vulnerability that can allow an unauthenticated attacker to retrieve a user&#8217;s encrypted password, and it&#8217;s under active exploitation.<\/li>\n<li>CVSS 9.8 \u2013 <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cve.org\/CVERecord?id=CVE-2022-21445\">CVE-2022-21445<\/a>: Unauthenticated attackers with HTTP network access can easily compromise and take over certain versions of Oracle Application Development Framework.<\/li>\n<li>CVSS 9.8 \u2013 <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cve.org\/CVERecord?id=CVE-2020-14644\">CVE-2020-14644<\/a>: A flaw in certain versions of Oracle WebLogic Server in Oracle Fusion Middleware can allow an unauthenticated attacker with network access to take over the server. Active exploitation of this vulnerability has been reported.<\/li>\n<li>CVSS 8.8 \u2013 <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cve.org\/CVERecord?id=CVE-2020-0618\">CVE-2020-0618<\/a>: Microsoft SQL&#8217;s Server Reporting Services has an RCE vulnerability when incorrectly handling page requests, and it&#8217;s being exploited in the wild.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">Craigslist founder pledges $100M for cyber security projects<\/h3>\n<p>Craig Newmark, who started his eponymous list in 1995, is worried about the state of cyber security in the United States, so he&#8217;s pledged $100 million of his own fortune to fix it.<\/p>\n<p>The Wall Street Journal shared news of the initiative, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/cybersecurity\/craigslist-founder-pledges-100-million-to-boost-u-s-cybersecurity-5357f5ae\">reporting<\/a> that Newmark plans to donate $50 million toward protecting critical infrastructure from cyberattacks. The other half will go toward public education on simple security practices \u2013 like using password managers, updating software, and the like.<\/p>\n<p>Newmark&#8217;s moving fast, too \u2013 some of the money has already been awarded to the University of Chicago to recruit and train cyber security professionals for local infrastructure projects, and another chunk has been allotted to child internet safety group Common Sense Media.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The country is under attack,&#8221; Newmark told the Journal, adding that he sees his efforts as championing the work of American cyber security professionals.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">UK Apple users urged to watch for new iCloud scam<\/h3>\n<p>The UK&#8217;s reporting center for fraud and cyber crime <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/actionfrauduk\/status\/1834528338305585528\">warned<\/a> last week of a scam going around for which anyone whose iCloud storage fills up frequently should be on the lookout.<\/p>\n<p>According to Action Fraud, the last two weeks have seen over 1,800 reports of emails claiming the recipient&#8217;s iCloud storage space was running out &#8211; and offering a link to buy more storage.<\/p>\n<p>Those links, naturally, are phishing sites on which cyber criminals are harvesting Apple IDs \u2013 likely for further compromise in the future, resale or other malicious use.<\/p>\n<p>Buyers for such info are legion.<\/p>\n<p>According to IBM&#8217;s X-Force threat intel team, around <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/09\/14\/cloud_credentials_dark_web\/\" rel=\"noopener\">90 percent<\/a> of the goods and services sold on dark web marketplaces are stolen credentials. Verizon&#8217;s 2023 Data Breach Investigation <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/whitepapers.theregister.com\/paper\/view\/22616\/2023-data-breach-investigation-report\">Report<\/a> found around half of all data breaches, and 86 percent of basic web application attacks against web applications, start with stolen credentials.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">Mystery $75M ransomware payer identified<\/h3>\n<p>When we <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/08\/02\/dark_angels_ransomware\/\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> on what was <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chainalysis.com\/blog\/2024-crypto-crime-mid-year-update-part-1\/\">believed<\/a> to be the largest-ever ransomware payment \u2013 $75 million &#8211; in early August, we didn&#8217;t know who paid it, but their identity may have been uncovered.<\/p>\n<p>According to unnamed insiders who spoke to Bloomberg, the payment was made by drug distributor <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-09-18\/gang-got-75-million-for-cencora-hack-in-largest-known-ransom\">Cencora<\/a>, which was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/05\/27\/security_in_brief\/\" rel=\"noopener\">breached<\/a> in February. According to notifications from the time of the breach, stolen data included health records and other PII.<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg reported that Cencora&#8217;s data was stolen by the Dark Angels gang and that the payment was made in Bitcoin in three separate installments. The original ransom demand was reportedly double that, Bloomberg&#8217;s sources claimed.<\/p>\n<p>The healthcare sector has been an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2020\/03\/16\/proofpoint_interview\/\" rel=\"noopener\">increasingly popular target<\/a> for threat actors due to poor cyber security tooling and the highly sensitive nature of medical data.<\/p>\n<p>Cencora declined to comment on the matter to Bloomberg, calling reports that it paid ransom &#8220;speculation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">Dell investigating alleged employee data leak<\/h3>\n<p>The miscreant behind the earlier <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/09\/12\/capgemini_breach_data_dump\/\" rel=\"noopener\">leak of data<\/a> from French IT firm Capgemini has resurfaced with a claim they hold stolen employee info from Dell.<\/p>\n<p>Dell confirmed to BleepingComputer that it was <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/news\/security\/dell-investigates-data-breach-claims-after-hacker-leaks-employee-info\/\">looking<\/a> into the claims of a crook who goes by &#8220;Grep&#8221; and posted in a hacking forum detailing data describing nearly 11,000 Dell and partner employees stolen during &#8220;a minor data breach&#8221; earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>Grep claimed employee names, status, and internal ID numbers were included in the stolen dataset \u2013 far less valuable than what he or she <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/09\/12\/capgemini_breach_data_dump\/\" rel=\"noopener\">made off with from Capgemini<\/a> earlier this month. In that case, the stolen data allegedly included source code, credentials, API keys, and employee data.<\/p>\n<p>The value \u2013 or lack thereof \u2013 of the data allegedly stolen from Dell was reflected in its price: According to reports, the entire set of more than 10,800 records can be had for around $0.30.<\/p>\n<p>If accurate, this would mark the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/05\/09\/dell_data_stolen\/\" rel=\"noopener\">second theft<\/a> of a database from Dell in recent months. \u00ae<\/p>\n<p> READ MORE <a
