Instead, the fine is about spam.<\/p>\n<p>You may remember the California outfit from a 2021 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/03\/10\/150k_cctv_cameras_verkada_breach\/\" rel=\"noopener\">security incident<\/a> that flowed from an admin-level username and password combo for its systems being left online. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/295m-penalty-and-permanent-injunction-resolves-lawsuit-against-verkada-inc-alleged-unlawful\">asserted<\/a> Samuel Levin, director of the FTC&#8217;s bureau of consumer protection. &#8220;Companies that fail to secure and protect consumer data can expect to be held responsible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote\" readability=\"5\">\n<p>Verkada neither admits nor denies any of the allegations in the complaint<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>For what it&#8217;s worth, Verkada <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.verkada.com\/blog\/verkada-series-d-extension\/\">scored<\/a> $100 million in its latest venture capital funding round in October 2023 \u2013 so it can afford this settlement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Verkada neither admits nor denies any of the allegations in the complaint,&#8221;
