{"id":56799,"date":"2024-08-09T14:31:17","date_gmt":"2024-08-09T14:31:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/36199\/Paris-Olympics-Deal-With-Ransomware-Attack.html"},"modified":"2024-08-09T14:31:17","modified_gmt":"2024-08-09T14:31:17","slug":"paris-olympics-deal-with-ransomware-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/paris-olympics-deal-with-ransomware-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"Paris Olympics Deal With Ransomware Attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/files.scmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/080924_paris_olympics.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"GuttenbergBlockFactory_wrapper__AcvAp\" readability=\"43.918918918919\">\n<p><strong>Editor&#8217;s Note: <\/strong><em>This story was originally posted by our sister publication <a href=\"https:\/\/insight.scmagazineuk.com\/paris-olympics-deals-with-ransomware-attack\">SC Magazine UK<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A ransomware attack against the Paris Grand Palais exhibition hall, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmagazine.com\/news\/malware-scammers-gearing-up-for-2024-summer-olympics-in-paris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Olympic events<\/a> are being held, is being investigated.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-gb\/news\/world\/french-police-probe-ransomware-attack-on-olympic-venue\/ar-AA1ok98q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MSN<\/a>, a police investigation determined that the attackers targeted the institution&#8217;s central computer system, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmagazine.com\/perspective\/how-companies-can-secure-their-data-as-the-summer-olympics-begin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the incident<\/a> had not caused any disruption to Olympic events.<\/p>\n<p>The computer system at the venue also handles data for 40 \u2014 mainly small \u2014 museums with which it is affiliated, the prosecutors said in an email.<\/p>\n<p>Josh Jacobson, director of professional services at HackerOne called the attack unsurprising \u2014 but potentially quite creative. He said the outcome of this successful compromise could be beneficial to cybercriminals in a number of ways:<\/p>\n<p>1) Because of the sheer number of venues that will be scrambling to get their operations up and running, the bad actors could be hoping to rake in ransoms across the victim pool and maximise financial gain.<\/p>\n<p>2) Targeting more locations than just the Grand Palais may scale as threat actors focus on \u2018easier\u2019 targets and attempt to use this access as a foothold into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmagazine.com\/perspective\/guarding-the-games-cybersecurity-challenges-ahead-of-2024-paris-olympics\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.scmagazine.com\/perspective\/guarding-the-games-cybersecurity-challenges-ahead-of-2024-paris-olympics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Olympics\u2019 broader IT systems<\/a>. It will be interesting to watch the situation unfold on the world stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith less than a week remaining, time will tell if additional cyber incidents happen at the summer games,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe potential impact on individuals is a genuine cause for concern and must be managed.
