{"id":56751,"date":"2024-08-01T16:13:34","date_gmt":"2024-08-01T16:13:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/36166\/US-Voters-Reminded-That-DDoS-Attacks-Cant-Touch-Election-Systems.html"},"modified":"2024-08-01T16:13:34","modified_gmt":"2024-08-01T16:13:34","slug":"us-voters-reminded-that-ddos-attacks-cant-touch-election-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/us-voters-reminded-that-ddos-attacks-cant-touch-election-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"US Voters Reminded That DDoS Attacks Can&#8217;t Touch Election Systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US law enforcement and cybersecurity agencies are reminding the public that the country&#8217;s voting systems will remain unaffected by distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks as the next presidential election fast approaches.<\/p>\n<p>The PSA from both the FBI and CISA soon followed an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/07\/31\/microsoft_ddos_azure\/\" rel=\"noopener\">eight-hour outage at Microsoft Azure<\/a> this week, which it admitted yesterday began as a DDoS attack whose impact was actually exacerbated by an &#8220;error&#8221; were included as examples of services that could be made unavailable.<\/p>\n<p>But you&#8217;re only getting your political news from trusted sources anyway, right?<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cybercrime&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Zq8nQQVgG71RfLD4z9UvnAAAAIg&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cybercrime&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Zq8nQQVgG71RfLD4z9UvnAAAAIg&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>The feds didn&#8217;t go as far as to say they expected DDoS attacks to strike the November election, but they did comment on how popular a tactic they are among politically and ideologically motivated hacktivists and cybercriminals.<\/p>\n<p>They also said those who launch DDoS attacks may falsely claim the disruption they cause is tantamount to a compromise of election systems \u2013 all in a bid to undermine public confidence in the democratic process.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the event that foreign actors or cybercriminals conduct DDoS attacks against election infrastructure or other infrastructure supporting election administration, the underlying data and internal systems would remain uncompromised, and anyone eligible to vote would still be able to cast a ballot,&#8221; the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ic3.gov\/Media\/Y2024\/PSA240731\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PSA<\/a> reads.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cybercrime&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Zq8nQQVgG71RfLD4z9UvnAAAAIg&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cybercrime&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Zq8nQQVgG71RfLD4z9UvnAAAAIg&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>&#8220;In the past, cyber actors have falsely claimed DDoS attacks have compromised the integrity of voting systems to mislead the public that their attack would prevent a voter from casting a ballot or change votes already cast.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The FBI and CISA have no reporting to suggest a DDoS attack has ever prevented an eligible voter from casting a ballot, compromised the integrity of any ballots cast, or disrupted the ability to tabulate votes or transmit election results in a timely manner.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The recommended steps are short and simple: Only trust information from official sources such as election officials, contact those officials if election-critical websites are downed, and remember that voting systems can&#8217;t be compromised by a DDoS attack.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">Chipping away at confidence<\/h3>\n<p>Foreign adversaries have been trying to undermine confidence in the US election process for many years in cyberspace, with the main culprits being China, Iran, and Russia \u2013 unsurprisingly.<\/p>\n<p>There are, of course, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/man-arrested-making-threats-arizona-election-office\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">several<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/02\/26\/kramer_magician_biden_robocall\/\" rel=\"noopener\">instances<\/a> of individuals in the US trying to interfere with their own country&#8217;s voters, urging them to vote in one way or another.<\/p>\n<p>US senator Mark Warner (D-VA) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/03\/04\/super_tuesday_election_security\/\" rel=\"noopener\">suggested<\/a> earlier this year that the US is less prepared for election interference than it was back in 2020, citing Russia, a ban on CISA from helping social media platforms curb misinformation, and the power of AI and deepfake-enabled misinformation campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>A recent <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/04\/25\/mandiant_russia_and_iran_pose\/\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by Mandiant agreed that influence operations were highly likely to play a role in the upcoming election, including those generated with AI tech and amplified across social media.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-China influence groups, for example, have been seen spreading deepfake videos of prominent US celebrities criticizing election candidates to mask the fact it&#8217;s propaganda spread by a malign force.<\/p>\n<p>All of the efforts over the past decade or so have hammered voter confidence in elections. According to nonprofit <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/worldjusticeproject.org\/news\/us-voter-confidence-down-here%E2%80%99s-how-restore-it\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">World Justice Project<\/a>, just 58 percent of US citizens believed they could vote freely and without harassment or pressure \u2013 a significant drop from 91 percent in 2016. Equally, the Pew Research Center <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2022\/10\/31\/views-of-election-administration-and-confidence-in-vote-counts\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">found<\/a> the events surrounding the 2020 election had a negative impact on voter confidence too. \u00ae<\/p>\n<p> READ MORE <a
