{"id":55936,"date":"2024-04-26T15:06:13","date_gmt":"2024-04-26T15:06:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/35816\/750-Million-Vulnerable-To-Snooping-From-Chinese-Keyboard-Apps.html"},"modified":"2024-04-26T15:06:13","modified_gmt":"2024-04-26T15:06:13","slug":"750-million-vulnerable-to-snooping-from-chinese-keyboard-apps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/750-million-vulnerable-to-snooping-from-chinese-keyboard-apps\/","title":{"rendered":"750 Million Vulnerable To Snooping From Chinese Keyboard Apps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many Chinese keyboard apps, some from major handset manufacturers, can leak keystrokes to determined snoopers, leaving perhaps three quarters of a billion people at risk according to research from the University of Toronto\u2019s Citizen Lab.<\/p>\n<p>As the Lab\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tspace.library.utoronto.ca\/bitstream\/1807\/138305\/1\/CitizenLabReport%23175--keyboardvuln.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">findings<\/a> [PDF] explain, \u201cThere is no way to fit the tens of thousands of Chinese characters that exist onto a single keyboard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Computers set for use by Chinese language speakers therefore employ \u201cInput Method Editor\u201d (IME) software , the most popular of which use the Pinyin scheme that makes it possible to represent the sounds of Mandarin using the Latin alphabet. Apps from Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, Honor and iFlytek use crypto that has already been compromised by a working exploit that allows active and passive eavesdroppers to intercept keystrokes. Baidu did fix the most serious issues the researchers found but didn\u2019t fix them all.<\/p>\n<p>Tencent promised to fix its wares by April 1st but appears not to have done so at the time of publication \u2013 perhaps because it considers one if its insecure app to have reached end-of-life.<\/p>\n<p>Even if apps are updated to address the flaws Citizen lab found, the org worries that difficulties updating software mean the problems will persist. Honor devices, for example, don\u2019t offer a facility to update keyboard apps. Updating Samsung\u2019s apps requires creation of an account. The Lab\u2019s researchers also found some app updates are geoblocked.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\"> <noscript> <a alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe scope of these severe vulnerabilities cannot be understated,\u201d the report concludes, because the keyboard apps Citizen Lab studied enjoy over 95 percent market share in China, and the handset-makers that pre-installed vulnerable software collectively own half the market.<\/p>\n<p>By Citizen Lab\u2019s reckoning, about 780 million people were therefore at risk of smartphone surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>It gets worse: the Lab last year found similar problems with a popular input app called Sogou, leading to an \u201cestimate that close to one billion users are affected by this class of vulnerabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At this point, readers might reach the conclusion that China\u2019s government would not mind access to its citizens\u2019 smartphones.<\/p>\n<p>Citizen Lab suggests that hypothesis is weak \u2013 because Beijing doesn\u2019t need backdoors as it already collects keystroke data, wouldn\u2019t like the idea of third parties doing likewise, and constantly urges improved software security.<\/p>\n<p>The Lab attributes the issues to a reluctance to use proven ciphers, perhaps out of fear they\u2019ve been compromised by western powers.<\/p>\n<p>The research suggests many actions that could be taken across the smartphone ecosystem \u2013 developers, manufacturers, and app stores \u2013 to make this kind of
