{"id":55916,"date":"2024-04-24T17:15:11","date_gmt":"2024-04-24T17:15:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/microsoft-cannot-keep-its-own-security-in-order-so-what-hope-for-its-add-ons-customers\/"},"modified":"2024-04-24T17:15:11","modified_gmt":"2024-04-24T17:15:11","slug":"microsoft-cannot-keep-its-own-security-in-order-so-what-hope-for-its-add-ons-customers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/microsoft-cannot-keep-its-own-security-in-order-so-what-hope-for-its-add-ons-customers\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft cannot keep its own security in order, so what hope for its add-ons customers?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft has come under fire for charging for security add-ons despite the company&#8217;s own patchy record when it comes to vulnerabilities and breaches.<\/p>\n<p>A week rarely goes by without some incident or other involving Microsoft products, be it the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/04\/03\/cisa_microsoft_exchange_online_china_report\/\" rel=\"noopener\">infamous Exchange Online raid<\/a> by a China-linked group or an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/04\/12\/microsoft_cisa_order\/\" rel=\"noopener\">internal breach<\/a> that resulted in data being exfiltrated from Microsoft&#8217;s email system. However, Microsoft execs remain quick to talk up the company&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2024-04-17\/microsoft-still-dominates-cybersecurity-business-after-hacks\">security revenues<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some enterprises might find it galling to be forced to pay for must-have security add-ons on top of their existing subscriptions. Getting core security tools requires a Microsoft 365 E5 subscription or topping up an E3 subscription with compliance add-ons, and even then the company will demand payment for certain tools.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"condor\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=2&amp;c=2ZilEkRJBQHOWmJ@suw4yKgAAAAQ&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D2%26raptor%3Dcondor%26pos%3Dtop%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=2&amp;c=2ZilEkRJBQHOWmJ@suw4yKgAAAAQ&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D2%26raptor%3Dcondor%26pos%3Dtop%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Microsoft 365 E5 (without Teams) currently costs \u00a350.30 (and $54.75 Stateside) per user per month with an annual commitment. E3 (also without Teams) is \u00a331 per user per month (or \u00a733.75 in the US). It did make a couple of concessions on that front after a couple of much-publicized attacks last year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Indeed it did. In 2023 Microsoft <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/07\/20\/under_cisa_spressures_collaboration_microsoft\/\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> it would provide all customers free access to cloud security logs in an effort to &#8220;increase the secure-by-default baseline&#8221; of its cloud platform. With the company&#8217;s recent security failures being classed as a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/04\/21\/microsoft_national_security_risk\/\" rel=\"noopener\">national security issue<\/a> in some quarters, it is high time for the company to think the unthinkable, and perhaps sacrifice some security revenues in order to ensure more customers
