{"id":556,"date":"2018-05-14T09:08:29","date_gmt":"2018-05-14T09:08:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/family-planning-office-warns-customers-private-parts-may-be-exposed\/"},"modified":"2018-05-14T09:08:29","modified_gmt":"2018-05-14T09:08:29","slug":"family-planning-office-warns-customers-private-parts-may-be-exposed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/family-planning-office-warns-customers-private-parts-may-be-exposed\/","title":{"rendered":"Family Planning office warns customers private parts may be exposed"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2017\/01\/26\/ransomnote.jpg?x=1200&amp;y=794\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"\/><\/div>\n<p>The Australian State of New South Wales&#8217; reproductive and sexual health organisation Family Planning NSW has advised users of an April 2018 ransomware attack that may have compromised sensitive information.<\/p>\n<p>The agency apparently retained web form messages on the public-facing server, meaning if its database was breached, attackers would have access to individuals&#8217; messages to Family Planning.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation said it&#8217;s contacting up to 8,000 clients to advise them of the April 26 event, and at the time of writing, its Website carried the message \u201cOur website is getting a security update\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The agency says it was one of several \u201ctargeted by these cyber criminals requesting a Bitcoin ransom on ANZAC Day<sup>*<\/sup> [April 25th]\u201d. The organisation&#8217;s message says the site was \u201csecured by 10am on April 26\u201d, and \u201cmore sensitive medical records held internally were never under threat\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Family Planning NSW says it has contacted the Australian Federal Police about the attack.<\/p>\n<p>As writer Lauren Ingram <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/laureningram\/status\/995827612227325952\">pointed out<\/a> on Twitter, even the contents of a contact form can contain sensitive information: \u201cPeople contact Family Planning NSW for everything from contraception and advice on unplanned pregnancy\/abortion, to cervical cancer screenings, STI tests, vasectomies and men\u2019s sexual heath\u201d, she noted.<\/p>\n<p>Family Planning told <em>The Register<\/em> while there was a demand for ransom, \u201cAccording to a security analysis by our webhost, they did not attempt to encrypt data let alone succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The attackers put a message on the site threatening to shut it down unless they were paid AU$15,000 in Bitcoin, CEO Ann Brassil told a press conference today.<\/p>\n<p>The sensitivity of the information brings any potential breach under Australia&#8217;s Notifiable Data Breaches Scheme, which launched in February 2018 (it&#8217;s administered by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner \u2013 there&#8217;s an explainer <a target=\"_blank\"
