{"id":55582,"date":"2024-03-14T01:46:08","date_gmt":"2024-03-14T01:46:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/us-congress-goes-bang-bang-on-tiktok-sale-or-ban-plan\/"},"modified":"2024-03-14T01:46:08","modified_gmt":"2024-03-14T01:46:08","slug":"us-congress-goes-bang-bang-on-tiktok-sale-or-ban-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/us-congress-goes-bang-bang-on-tiktok-sale-or-ban-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"US Congress goes bang, bang, on TikTok sale-or-ban plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United States House of Representatives on Wednesday passed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act \u2013 a law aimed at forcing TikTok&#8217;s Chinese parent ByteDance to sell the app&#8217;s US operations or face the prospect of a ban.<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/7521\" rel=\"noopener\">bill<\/a> names only TikTok as a &#8220;foreign adversary controlled application&#8221; and prohibits &#8220;Providing services to distribute, maintain, or update&#8221; the app \u2013 including by offering it for sale in an app store. Even updates to the app aren&#8217;t allowed.<\/p>\n<p>If TikTok&#8217;s US operations were locally owned and operated, none of the sanctions the bill mentions would be enforceable. Freedom of speech is one argument advanced as a reason to consider the law deeply. The impact of a ban on TikTokkers who make a living on the platform is another \u2013 an argument TikTok has fostered and supported.<\/p>\n<p>Whether the law is practical is also being debated. Chinese authorities have said they will prevent TikTok&#8217;s owner from offloading the app&#8217;s stateside operations. The former CEO of Activision Blizzard, Bobby Kotick, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/why-the-new-effort-to-ban-tiktok-caught-fire-with-lawmakers-7cd3f980\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly<\/a> tried to put together an acquisition, but Chinese media <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pandaily.com\/bytedance-denies-former-blizzard-ceos-negotiation-to-purchase-tiktok\/\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that rumor was not accurate.<\/p>\n<p>While debate rages about the bill, few have paused to remember that non-Chinese social networks are all-but-banned in China.
