While early reports suggested multiple carriers, including Verizon and T-Mobile, seemed to be affected, that appears to be a knock-on effect of a major network going down.<\/p>\n<p>As of late Thursday morning, AT&amp;T had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/22\/tech\/att-cell-service-outage\/index.html\">told CNN Business<\/a> that most of its network had been restored. The Federal Communications Commission, along with other federal agencies, have been in touch with AT&amp;T about the outage, according to CNN.<\/p>\n<p>Service monitoring site <a href=\"https:\/\/downdetector.com\/\">Downdetector<\/a> was showing multiple post-paid and pre-paid carriers as having increased outage reports starting at around 4 am Eastern time. An Ars editor in Texas has seen &#8220;SOS&#8221; on their iPhone since 4:30 am ET and has been unable to make Wi-Fi calls.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/t-verizon-t-mobile-customers-hit-widespread-cellular-outages-us-rcna139938\">AT&amp;T acknowledged the outage to CNBC<\/a>, telling the network that it was &#8220;working urgently to restore service&#8221; to customers and that it recommended Wi-Fi calling until service could be restored. Verizon and T-Mobile told CNBC that they suspected their customers were reporting outages when they could not reach customers on AT&amp;T or resellers that use AT&amp;T networks.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency services around the country, including in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChicagoOEMC\/status\/1760652962077032706\">Chicago<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CMPD\/status\/1760624126467981629\">Charlotte, North Carolina<\/a>, have issued warnings about how such a cellular outage could leave people unable to call 911 during emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>AT&amp;T has not disclosed the source of the outage. An &#8220;industry source&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/22\/tech\/att-cell-service-outage\/index.html\">told CNN<\/a> that they suspected the issue was related &#8220;to how cellular services hand off calls from one network to the next,&#8221; or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peering\">peering<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>This is a developing story.
