Memory safety errors are the source of the majority of vulnerabilities for Google and Microsoft, and this has led to evangelism for memory-safe Rust and a scarlet letter for C\/C++.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Based on historical vulnerability density statistics, Rust has proactively prevented hundreds of vulnerabilities from impacting the Android ecosystem,&#8221; said Dave Kleidermacher, Google VP of engineering, Android security and privacy, in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/security.googleblog.com\/2024\/02\/improving-interoperability-between-rust-and-c.html\">a statement<\/a>. &#8220;This investment aims to expand the adoption of Rust across various components of the platform.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"condor\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> rel=\"noopener\">Mark Russinovich<\/a>, and from public sector figures like CISA director <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/securebydesign\/dir-easterly-remarks-carnegie-mellon-university\">Jen Easterly<\/a>, not to mention industry efforts like ISRG&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/09\/02\/isrg_prossimo_sudo_rs\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Prossimo<\/a>, there&#8217;s pressure on software developers to consider Rust and other memory-safe alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Lars Bergstrom, director of Android platform tools and libraries and chair of the Rust Foundation Board, announced the grant and said that the funding will &#8220;improve the ability of Rust code to interoperate with existing legacy C++ codebases.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bergstrom told <em>The Register<\/em> that interoperability with C++ represents one of the biggest obstacles to broader adoption of Rust for Google and other organizations.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>&#8220;This is the most common hurdle all organizations have to overcome to increase their implementation of Rust,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Many existing legacy code bases, as well as core libraries and services, are either written in C++ or only have APIs available in C++, Java, Go, or Python. Integrating Rust today is possible where there is a fallback C API, but for high-performance and high-fidelity interoperability, improving the ability to work directly with C++ code is the single biggest initiative that will further the ability to adopt Rust.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Google&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/chromium.googlesource.com\/chromiumos\/docs\/+\/master\/development_basics.md\">Chromium<\/a> project consists largely of C++ code, and Android uses the language too, alongside Java and others.<\/p>\n<p>According to Bergstrom, Google&#8217;s most significant increase in the use of Rust has occurred in Android, where interoperability started receiving attention <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/security.googleblog.com\/2021\/06\/rustc-interop-in-android-platform.html\">in 2021<\/a>, although Rust is also being deployed elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Google has also been working to make developer tools like <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/dtolnay\/cxx\">cxx<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/google\/autocxx\">autocxx<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/rust-lang.github.io\/rust-bindgen\/\">bindgen<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/eqrion\/cbindgen\">cbindgen<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/rust-diplomat\/diplomat\">diplomat<\/a>, and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/google\/crubit\">crubit<\/a> handle communication between Rust and C++ code.<\/p>\n<p>Bergstrom said that as of mid-2023, Google had <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/opensource.googleblog.com\/2023\/06\/rust-fact-vs-fiction-5-insights-from-googles-rust-journey-2022.html\">more than 1,000 developers<\/a> who had committed Rust code, adding that the ad giant recently released the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/security.googleblog.com\/2023\/09\/scaling-rust-adoption-through-training.html\">training material<\/a> it uses.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_software\/devops&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33ZcGMOQoA7xkY3KH-G@XRTgAAAMI&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_software\/devops&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33ZcGMOQoA7xkY3KH-G@XRTgAAAMI&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>&#8220;We also have a team working on building out interoperability,&#8221; he added. &#8220;We hope that this team\u2019s work on addressing challenges specific to Google\u2019s codebases will complement the industry-wide investments from this new grant we\u2019ve provided to the Rust Foundation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Google&#8217;s grant matches a $1 million grant last November <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dwizzzleMSFT\/status\/1720134540822520268\">from Microsoft<\/a>, which also committed $10 million in internal investment to make Rust a &#8220;first-class language in our engineering systems.&#8221; The Google-bucks are expected to fund further interoperability efforts, along the lines of KDAB&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/KDAB\/cxx-qt\">bidirectional Rust and C++ bindings<\/a> with Qt.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Rumbul, executive director and CEO of the Rust Foundation said in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/foundation.rust-lang.org\/news\/google-contributes-1m-to-rust-foundation-to-support-c-rust-interop-initiative\/\">a statement<\/a> that while Rust offers technical advantages, it&#8217;s unrealistic to expect organizations to abandon existing codebases.
