{"id":55179,"date":"2024-01-27T01:34:16","date_gmt":"2024-01-27T01:34:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/microsoft-sheds-some-light-on-russian-email-heist-and-how-to-learn-from-redmonds-mistakes\/"},"modified":"2024-01-27T01:34:16","modified_gmt":"2024-01-27T01:34:16","slug":"microsoft-sheds-some-light-on-russian-email-heist-and-how-to-learn-from-redmonds-mistakes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/microsoft-sheds-some-light-on-russian-email-heist-and-how-to-learn-from-redmonds-mistakes\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft sheds some light on Russian email heist \u2013 and how to learn from Redmond&#8217;s mistakes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft, a week after disclosing that Kremlin-backed spies broke into its network and stole internal emails and files from its executives and staff, has now confirmed the compromised corporate account used in the genesis of the heist didn&#8217;t even have multi-factor authentication (MFA) enabled.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Redmond <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/security\/blog\/2024\/01\/25\/midnight-blizzard-guidance-for-responders-on-nation-state-attack\/\">admitted<\/a> Midnight Blizzard \u2013 a Moscow-supported espionage team also known as APT29 or Cozy Bear \u2013 &#8220;utilized password spray attacks that successfully compromised a legacy, non-production test tenant account that did not have multifactor authentication (MFA) enabled.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A password-spray attack is where a miscreant <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/owasp.org\/www-community\/attacks\/Password_Spraying_Attack\">tries to<\/a> log into a number of accounts using one password, then waiting a while and trying again with another password, and repeating this over and over. It&#8217;s a type of brute-force attack designed to avoid tripping monitoring systems that catch multiple failed logins to one account in a short period of time. Password spraying is more subtle, and when an account with a weak password is identified by the attackers, they can use that to start drilling into the IT estate.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"condor\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cso&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=2&amp;c=2ZbTnhfiWZMLWQeoXvwgTwQAAAo0&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D2%26raptor%3Dcondor%26pos%3Dtop%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cso&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=2&amp;c=2ZbTnhfiWZMLWQeoXvwgTwQAAAo0&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D2%26raptor%3Dcondor%26pos%3Dtop%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>After gaining initial access to a non-production Microsoft system, the intruders compromised a legacy test OAuth application that had access to the Windows giant&#8217;s corporate IT environment. From there we&#8217;re told:<\/p>\n<p>The crew then used this access to steal emails and other files from corporate inboxes belonging to top Microsoft executives and other staff. We&#8217;ll leave it up to you as to whether or not to trust its advice but hey, at least some of us could learn from Redmond&#8217;s mistakes.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>As a recap: <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/01\/20\/chinese_russia_vmware_microsoft\/\" rel=\"noopener\">last Friday<\/a> Redmond admitted the snoops, linked to Russia&#8217;s foreign intelligence, &#8220;used a password spray attack to compromise a legacy non-production test tenant account and gain a foothold, and then used the account&#8217;s permissions to access a very small percentage of Microsoft corporate email accounts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This all happened in late November, Microsoft didn&#8217;t spot the intrusion until January 12, and the compromised email accounts included those of senior leadership and cybersecurity and legal employees.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft&#8217;s disclosures turned the spotlight on the apparent insufficient MFA protection deployed within the IT titan, which, as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/01\/24\/microsoft_latest_breach_cozy_bear\/\" rel=\"noopener\">US Senator Ron Wyden told<\/a> <em>The Register<\/em>, is &#8220;inexcusable&#8221; and &#8220;would have prevented this latest attack.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" active protections are enabled to comply with current policies and guidance, resulting in better protection against these sorts of attacks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to Redmond&#8217;s latest threat intelligence: &#8220;For Microsoft, this incident has highlighted the urgent need to move even faster.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Or, you know, review basic security hygiene across the whole shebang \u2013 and
