30 Under 30 list<\/a> in 2021, but within two short years, his recently updated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/sam-bankman-fried\/?list=30under30-finance&amp;sh=cef17bd44490\">Forbes profile<\/a> notes that the man who was once &#8220;one of the richest people in crypto&#8221; in &#8220;a stunning fall from grace&#8221; now has a real-time net worth of $0.<\/p>\n<p>In November, Bankman-Fried was <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2023\/11\/guilty-sam-bankman-fried-convicted-on-all-counts-after-monthlong-trial\/\">convicted by a 12-member jury of defrauding FTX customers<\/a>, after a monthlong trial where federal prosecutors accused him of building FTX into &#8220;a pyramid of deceit.&#8221; The trial followed months of wild headlines\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2023\/10\/sam-bankman-fried-lawyer-complains-us-portrays-him-as-cartoon-villain\/\">comparing Bankman-Fried to a cartoon villain<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2023\/03\/sam-bankman-fried-took-2-2-billion-in-payments-and-loans-ftx-tells-court\/\">accusing Bankman-Fried of stealing $2.2 billion from FTX customers<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2023\/09\/sbfs-parents-were-given-16-4m-house-paid-for-entirely-by-ftx-lawsuit-says\/\">buy things like a $16.4 million house<\/a> for his parents, and revealing that <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2023\/04\/sbf-called-alameda-unauditable-joked-about-losing-track-of-50-million\/\">Bankman-Fried casually joked about losing track of $50 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Defending against his crimes at FTX, Bankman-Fried argued that <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2023\/05\/sbf-says-dishonesty-and-unfair-dealing-arent-fraud-seeks-to-dismiss-charges\/\">&#8220;dishonesty and unfair dealing&#8221; aren&#8217;t fraud<\/a> and even claimed that he <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2023\/10\/facing-110-years-in-prison-sam-bankman-fried-cant-recall-what-he-did-at-ftx\/\">couldn&#8217;t recall what he did at FTX<\/a>, while <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2023\/04\/ftx-has-recovered-7-3-billion-tells-court-the-dumpster-fire-is-out\/\">FTX scrambled to recover $7.3 billion<\/a> and put out the &#8220;dumpster fire.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Bankman-Fried&#8217;s former FTX\/Alameda Research partners, <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2023\/10\/sbfs-ex-girlfriend-ellison-testifies-he-directed-me-to-commit-these-crimes\/\">including his ex-girlfriend Caroline Ellison<\/a>, testified against him.&nbsp;Ellison&#8217;s testimony led to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2023\/10\/sbfs-dream-of-being-us-president-and-other-weird-anecdotes-from-ftx-trial\/\">even weirder revelations about SBF<\/a>, like Bankman-Fried&#8217;s aspirations to become US president and his professed rejection of moral ideals like &#8220;don&#8217;t steal.&#8221; By the end of the trial, it seemed like very few felt any sympathy for the once-FTX kingpin.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad_wrapper\" aria-label=\"In Content advertisement\"> <span class=\"ad_notice\">Advertisement <\/span> <\/aside>\n<p>Bankman-Fried now faces a maximum sentence of 110 years. His exact sentence is scheduled to be determined by a US district judge in March 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/sam-bankman-frieds-conviction-whats-next-2023-11-03\/#:~:text=When%20will%20Bankman%2DFried%20be,the%20nature%20of%20the%20crime.\">Reuters reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While FTX had been considered a giant force in the cryptocurrency world, Binance is still the world&#8217;s biggest cryptocurrency exchange\u2014and considered more &#8220;systemically important&#8221; to crypto enthusiasts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/binance-isn-t-ftx-it-s-much-bigger-and-more-systemically-important-to-crypto-1.1901060\">Bloomberg reported<\/a>. That&#8217;s why it was a huge deal when Binance was rocked by its own scandal in 2023 that ended in its founder and CEO, Zhao,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2023\/11\/binance-ceo-changpeng-zhao-admits-to-money-laundering-in-plea-deal\/\">admitting to money laundering and resigning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Arguably Zhao&#8217;s fall from grace may have been more shocking to cryptocurrency fans than Bankman-Fried&#8217;s. Just one month prior to Zhao&#8217;s resignation, after FTX collapsed,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/podcasts\/2023\/10\/26\/an-interview-with-cz-cryptos-last-man-standing?utm_medium=affiliates.content.pd&amp;utm_source=Skimbit%20Ltd.&amp;utm_campaign=16002&amp;utm_content=Online%20Tracking%20Link&amp;irclickid=09jzTb0pCxyPUyTVdwRIQWZNUkH0CfzFRzXj1c0&amp;channel=Impact&amp;irgwc=1\">The Economist had dubbed<\/a> CZ as &#8220;crypto\u2019s last man standing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Zhao launched Binance in 2017 and the next year was featured on the cover of Forbes&#8217; first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbespr\/2018\/02\/07\/forbes-releases-first-ever-crypto-rich-list-a-compilation-of-the-20-wealthiest-people-in-crypto\/?sh=1eb03f360021#:~:text=Chris%20Larsen%2C%20a%20longtime%20tech,XRP%2C%20the%20token%20of%20Ripple.\">list<\/a> of the wealthiest people in crypto. Peering out from under a hoodie, Zhao was considered by Forbes to be a &#8220;crypto overlord,&#8221; going from &#8220;zero to billionaire in six months,&#8221; where other crypto bros had only managed to become millionaires.<\/p>\n<p>But 2023 put an abrupt end to Zhao&#8217;s reign at Binance. In March, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cftc.gov\/PressRoom\/PressReleases\/8680-23\">sued Binance<\/a> and Zhao over suspected money laundering and sanctions violations, <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2023\/06\/sec-sues-binance-says-it-evaded-us-law-with-extensive-web-of-deception\/\">triggering a Securities and Exchange Commission lawsuit<\/a> in June and a Department of Justice (DOJ) probe. In the end, Binance owed <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2023\/11\/binance-ceo-changpeng-zhao-admits-to-money-laundering-in-plea-deal\/\">billions in fines to the DOJ<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2023\/12\/binance-to-pay-2-7-billion-fine-after-hiding-shady-transactions-from-feds\/\">the CFTC<\/a>, which Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen called &#8220;historic penalties.&#8221; For personally directing Binance employees to skirt US regulatory compliance\u2014and hide more than 100,000 suspicious transactions linked to terrorism, child sexual abuse materials, and ransomware attacks\u2014Zhao now <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2023\/12\/binance-to-pay-2-7-billion-fine-after-hiding-shady-transactions-from-feds\/\">personally owes the CFTC $150 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Zhao <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cz_binance\/status\/1727063503125766367\">wrote<\/a> that after stepping down as Binance&#8217;s CEO, he will be
