{"id":54703,"date":"2023-11-28T14:09:52","date_gmt":"2023-11-28T14:09:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/35236\/Los-Angeles-SIM-Swapper-Sentenced-To-8-Years-In-Prison.html"},"modified":"2023-11-28T14:09:52","modified_gmt":"2023-11-28T14:09:52","slug":"los-angeles-sim-swapper-sentenced-to-8-years-in-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/los-angeles-sim-swapper-sentenced-to-8-years-in-prison\/","title":{"rendered":"Los Angeles SIM Swapper Sentenced To 8 Years In Prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.securityweek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Cybersecurity_News-SecurityWeek.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Amir Hossein Golshan, 25, of Los Angeles, was sentenced to 96 months in prison for perpetrating multiple cybercrime schemes, including one involving SIM swapping.<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>Between April 2019 and February 2023, Golshan caused roughly $740,000 in losses to hundreds of victims, as a result of various online scams and unauthorized access to digital accounts.\n<\/p>\n<p>According to court documents, Golshan took over victims\u2019 social media accounts, impersonated Apple support, and engaged in Zelle payment fraud schemes.\n<\/p>\n<p>To take control of victims\u2019 social media accounts, he used a technique called SIM swapping, in which he convinced mobile phone carriers to transfer the victims\u2019 numbers to SIM cards in his possession.\n<\/p>\n<p>This allowed Golshan to obtain two-factor authentication codes sent via text messages and access the victims\u2019 accounts.\n<\/p>\n<p>In addition to taking over the owners\u2019 accounts, Golshan targeted their friends, tricking them into sending him money.\n<\/p>\n<p>In one instance, after taking control over an influencer\u2019s Instagram account, he asked the victim\u2019s friends to send him thousands of dollars via PayPal, Zelle, and other online payment platforms. He also locked the victim out of the account, demanding $2,000 for returning access to the account.\n<\/p>\n<p>He also defrauded individuals by advertising fake and non-existent Instagram services, demanding fees of several hundred dollars. Using the SIM swapping and Zelle schemes, he received approximately $82,000 in payments from roughly 500 victims.<\/p>\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<p>By impersonating Apple support, Golshan gained access to victims\u2019 iCloud accounts, to steal NFTs, cryptocurrency, and other digital property. In total, he defrauded five individuals of between $2,000 and $389,000 each.\n<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the prison sentence, Golshan was ordered to pay over $1.2 million in restitution. In July,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.securityweek.com\/los-angeles-sim-swapper-pleads-guilty-to-cybercrime-charges\/\"> he pleaded guilty to using SIM swapping<\/a> against three
