{"id":54279,"date":"2023-10-24T15:48:58","date_gmt":"2023-10-24T15:48:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/35155\/Canadian-Lawmakers-Targeted-By-China-Linked-Spamouflage-Disinformation.html"},"modified":"2023-10-24T15:48:58","modified_gmt":"2023-10-24T15:48:58","slug":"canadian-lawmakers-targeted-by-china-linked-spamouflage-disinformation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/canadian-lawmakers-targeted-by-china-linked-spamouflage-disinformation\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Lawmakers Targeted By China-Linked Spamouflage Disinformation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.securityweek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Cybersecurity_News-SecurityWeek.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Canada on Monday warned of a \u201cSpamouflage\u201d disinformation campaign linked to China that used waves of online posts and deepfake videos manipulated to try to disparage and discredit Canadian lawmakers.\n<\/p>\n<p>The Global Affairs department said in a statement it had \u201cdetected a \u2018Spamouflage\u2019 campaign connected to the People\u2019s Republic of China.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>The bot network, according to the government ministry, left thousands of messages on the social media accounts of dozens of members of parliament, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and opposition leader Pierre Poilievre, accusing them of criminal and ethical violations.\n<\/p>\n<p>It started in early August and scaled up in September, it said, with the aim of \u201cdiscrediting and denigrating the targeted MPs\u201d and \u201csilencing criticism of the CCP,\u201d or Chinese Communist Party.\n<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s foreign ministry on Tuesday rejected the allegations, saying Ottawa \u201cconfuses black with white and misleads public opinion.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s allegations come after tech giant Meta said in an August security report it had purged thousands of Facebook and Instagram accounts that were part of the widespread online Chinese spam operation.\n<\/p>\n<p>Active across more than 50 platforms and forums including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and X, formerly known as Twitter, a Meta executive said it was believed to be \u201cthe largest\u201d and \u201cmost prolific covert influence operation\u201d in the world.<\/p>\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<p>The network typically posted praise for China and criticisms of the United States, Western foreign policies, and critics of the Chinese government including journalists and researchers, the Meta report said.\n<\/p>\n<p>Other targets have included Taiwan, Australia, Britain, Japan and global Chinese-speaking audiences.\n<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, China\u2019s foreign ministry angrily rejected the latest<br \/>allegations.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor some time now, the Canadian side has repeatedly claimed that China has spread disinformation targeting Canadian politicians, but they have never offered any proof,\u201d said spokesperson Mao Ning.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada is the one creating and spreading disinformation,\u201d she added.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina urges Canada to respect facts and truth, stop spreading lies about China, and stop poisoning the atmosphere of bilateral relations and damaging our ties with its words and deeds.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Relations between Ottawa and Beijing hit a low this year following accusations of Chinese meddling in Canadian elections and the attempted intimidation of MPs that led to
