{"id":54101,"date":"2023-10-13T00:21:34","date_gmt":"2023-10-13T00:21:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/squid-games-35-security-holes-still-unpatched-in-proxy-after-2-years-now-public\/"},"modified":"2023-10-13T00:21:34","modified_gmt":"2023-10-13T00:21:34","slug":"squid-games-35-security-holes-still-unpatched-in-proxy-after-2-years-now-public","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/squid-games-35-security-holes-still-unpatched-in-proxy-after-2-years-now-public\/","title":{"rendered":"Squid games: 35 security holes still unpatched in proxy after 2 years, now public"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>35 vulnerabilities in the Squid caching proxy remain unfixed more than two years after being found and disclosed to the open source project&#8217;s maintainers, according to the person who reported them.<\/p>\n<p>Squid is a caching and forwarding HTTP web proxy that is <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.squid-cache.org\/Intro\/why.html\">very widely used<\/a> by ISPs and website operators. We will update this story if and when we hear from the project.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/research&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44ZSi8u4nfjSr0-EGagRAheAAAAAY&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/research&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44ZSi8u4nfjSr0-EGagRAheAAAAAY&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>In the post, and on his website, Rogers <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/joshua.hu\/squid-security-audit-35-0days-45-exploits\">listed 45<\/a> exploitable security issues, noting that the ten remaining are the &#8220;result of similar, but different pathways to reproduce a vulnerability.&#8221; They run the gamut from use-after-free, memory leak, cache poisoning, assertion failure, and other flaws in various components.<\/p>\n<p>Rogers named the flaws and provided technical details about the vulnerabilities \u2013 including code breakdowns and PoCs \u2013 on <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/megamansec.github.io\/Squid-Security-Audit\">GitHub<\/a>. His website also lists 13 additional code issues that he considers to be garden variety bugs that don&#8217;t have security implications.<\/p>\n<p>Rogers says he found all of the flaws in Squid-5.0.5 and performed testing in &#8220;nearly every component possible: forward proxying, reverse proxying, all protocols supports (http, https, https intercept, urn, whois, gopher, ftp), responses, requests, &#8216;helpers,&#8217; DNS, ICAP, ESI, and caching. Every conceivable possible user and build configuration was used.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/research&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33ZSi8u4nfjSr0-EGagRAheAAAAAY&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/research&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33ZSi8u4nfjSr0-EGagRAheAAAAAY&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Squid&#8217;s most recent version is numbered 6.3.<\/p>\n<p>He also acknowledged that the Squid proxy&#8217;s maintainers \u2013 like most open source developers \u2013 are largely volunteers and may not have the support necessary to quickly fix all these problems.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Squid Team have been helpful and supportive during the process of reporting these issues,&#8221; Rogers conceded. &#8220;However, they are effectively understaffed, and simply do not have the resources to fix the discovered issues. Hammering them with demands to fix the issues won&#8217;t get far.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"promo_article no_img\">\n<h2 title=\"Apache PLC4X creator ends free support, asks for payment for his href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/01\/13\/opensource_apacheplc4x_payment\/\"><span>MUST READ<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<p>That, of course, is just the tip of a much larger iceberg: who should be responsible for maintaining and supporting open source software?<\/p>\n<p>To that point, the US National Security Agency and friends on Tuesday issued <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2023\/Oct\/10\/2003316369\/-1\/-1\/0\/CSI-IMPROVING-OSS-IN-OT-ICS.PDF\">a paper<\/a> [PDF] on open source software in operational environments and urged vendor support \u2013 both financial and otherwise \u2013 for open source software development and maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>But back to the issue at hand: with more than 2.5 million Squid instances available on the internet (according to Rogers), we&#8217;d suggest reading through the vulnerability descriptions if you are running the code.<\/p>\n<p>Then, as Rogers notes, &#8220;it is up to you to reassess
