{"id":53936,"date":"2023-10-02T14:54:22","date_gmt":"2023-10-02T14:54:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/35075\/Recently-Patched-TeamCity-Vuln-Exploited-To-Hack-Servers.html"},"modified":"2023-10-02T14:54:22","modified_gmt":"2023-10-02T14:54:22","slug":"recently-patched-teamcity-vuln-exploited-to-hack-servers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/recently-patched-teamcity-vuln-exploited-to-hack-servers\/","title":{"rendered":"Recently Patched TeamCity Vuln Exploited To Hack Servers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In-the-wild exploitation of a critical vulnerability in JetBrains\u2019 TeamCity continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI\/CD) server started just days after the availability of a patch was announced.<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2023-42793, impacts the on-premises version of TeamCity and it allows an unauthenticated attacker with access to a targeted server to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.securityweek.com\/in-the-wild-exploitation-expected-for-critical-teamcity-flaw-allowing-server-takeover\/\">achieve remote code execution<\/a> and gain administrative control of the system.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>JetBrains announced the release of TeamCity 2023.05.4, which <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.jetbrains.com\/teamcity\/2023\/09\/critical-security-issue-affecting-teamcity-on-premises-update-to-2023-05-4-now\/\">patches the flaw<\/a>, on September 21.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>Sonar, the code security firm whose researchers discovered the issue, released some limited information the same day, and published technical details roughly a week later after a proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit was made public.\n<\/p>\n<p>Sonar warned in its initial blog post that in-the-wild exploitation would likely be observed soon due to how easily the flaw can be exploited.\n<\/p>\n<p>Threat intelligence firm GreyNoise started seeing the first <a href=\"https:\/\/viz.greynoise.io\/tag\/jetbrains-teamcity-authentication-bypass-attempt?days=30\">exploitation attempts<\/a> on September 27, with a peak seen the following day. The company has seen attack attempts coming from 56 unique IP addresses as of October 1.\n<\/p>\n<p>A different threat intelligence company, Prodaft, reported seeing \u201cmany popular ransomware groups\u201d targeting CVE-2023-42793.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\" width=\"583\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/www.securityweek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/TeamCity-exploited.png\" alt class=\"wp-image-35170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.securityweek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/TeamCity-exploited.png 583w, https:\/\/www.securityweek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/TeamCity-exploited-360x204.png 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 583px) 100vw, 583px\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Shadowserver Foundation, a non-profit cybersecurity organization, has scanned the internet for <a href=\"https:\/\/dashboard.shadowserver.org\/statistics\/combined\/time-series\/?date_range=7&amp;source=http_vulnerable&amp;source=http_vulnerable6&amp;tag=cve-2023-42793%2B&amp;style=stacked\">vulnerable TeamCity servers<\/a> and identified nearly 1,300 unique IPs, with the highest percentage located in the United States, followed by Germany, Russia and China.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>Organizations using TeamCity should update their installation as soon as possible. For customers who cannot immediately install the update, JetBrains has provided a security patch plugin that can be used to mitigate the issue on servers running TeamCity 8.0 and later. TeamCity Cloud customers do not need to take any action.\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related<\/strong>: <a
