The networking and security company <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/supportportal.juniper.net\/s\/article\/2023-08-Out-of-Cycle-Security-Bulletin-Junos-OS-SRX-Series-and-EX-Series-Multiple-vulnerabilities-in-J-Web-can-be-combined-to-allow-a-preAuth-Remote-Code-Execution?language=en_US\">updated<\/a> the advisory on September 7, after security researchers published a proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit, and Juniper detected exploit attempts.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the flaws are PHP external variable modification vulnerabilities (CVE-2023-36844 and CVE-2023-36845). The other three are described as \u201cMissing Authentication for Critical Function vulnerability\u201d (CVE-2023-36846, CVE-2023-36847, and CVE-2023-36851).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote\" readability=\"5\">\n<p>We achieved unauthenticated and remote code execution without dropping a file on disk<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s unclear why Juniper chose to enumerate five CVEs instead of two. The org\u2019s descriptions for the two PHP external variable modification bugs are identical, as are the trio of missing authentication for critical function vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n<p>The bugs are all rated 5.3 on the ten\u2014point CVSS severity rating scale. But because they can be combined to achieve remote code execution (RCE) the series of security flaws together earned a critical 9.8 CVSS score.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"condor\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=2&amp;c=2ZQjUu9QB4QW7itB3HB72IwAAAZc&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D2%26raptor%3Dcondor%26pos%3Dtop%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=2&amp;c=2ZQjUu9QB4QW7itB3HB72IwAAAZc&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D2%26raptor%3Dcondor%26pos%3Dtop%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>On August 25, bug hunters at vulnerability scanning service provider watchTowr <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/labs.watchtowr.com\/cve-2023-36844-and-friends-rce-in-juniper-firewalls\/\">published<\/a> a multi-step proof of concept exploit for two of the bugs, CVE-2023-36845 and CVE-2023-36846, that allowed unauthenticated remote code execution by uploading two files.<\/p>\n<p>It gets worse: VulnCheck on Monday <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/vulncheck.com\/blog\/juniper-cve-2023-36845\">published<\/a> analysis in which its CTO Jacob Baines wrote that CVE-2023-36845 alone can achieve remote, unauthenticated code execution.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how Juniper describes CVE-2023-36845:<\/p>\n<p>Juniper did not respond to <em>The Register<\/em>&#8216;s inquiries about the new RCE exploit, the confusing CVE descriptions, or the number of still-vulnerable devices.<\/p>\n<p>For VulnCheck&#8217;s exploit, Baines abused <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Standard_streams#Standard_input_(stdin)\"><code>stdin<\/code><\/a> to point the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.php.net\/manual\/en\/configuration.file.php\">PHPRC<\/a> environment variable at config data of his choosing within a HTTP request without having to upload a separate file. Here&#8217;s how Baines explained the first part of the exploit:<\/p>\n<p>For the second part of the attack, Baines used two PHP features. First, <code>auto_prepend_file<\/code>, which he explains &#8220;causes the provided file to be added using the require function.&#8221; He paired that with <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.php.net\/manual\/en\/filesystem.configuration.php#ini.allow-url-include\"><code>allow_url_include<\/code><\/a>, which &#8220;allows the use of URL-aware fopen wrappers with the following functions: <code>include<\/code>, <code>include_once<\/code>, <code>require<\/code>, <code>require_once<\/code>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just like that, by only using CVE-2023-36845, we&#8217;ve achieved unauthenticated and remote code execution without actually dropping a file on disk,&#8221; Baines wrote. &#8220;Our private exploit establishes a reverse shell, but that&#8217;s quite trivial once you&#8217;ve reached this point.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xmd=\",fluid,mpu,leaderboard,\" data-lg=\",fluid,mpu,leaderboard,\" data-xlg=\",fluid,billboard,superleaderboard,mpu,leaderboard,\" data-xxlg=\",fluid,billboard,superleaderboard,brandwidth,brandimpact,leaderboard,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44ZQjUu9QB4QW7itB3HB72IwAAAZc&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44ZQjUu9QB4QW7itB3HB72IwAAAZc&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>VulnCheck has also released a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/vulncheck-oss\/cve-2023-36845-scanner\">free scanning tool<\/a> to identify firewalls vulnerable to CVE-2023-36845. Despite the flaws in Juniper\u2019s kit being known, and shown to be a real threat, VulnCheck believes the majority of affected internet-facing firewalls \u2014 about 15,000 devices \u2014 still
