The German outlet claimed private email addresses, salary info and bank details were also part of the breach.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">But wait: There&#8217;s more!<\/h3>\n<p>Tesla said Handelsblatt notified it of the breach in May and &#8220;stated it does not intend to publish the personal information, and in any event, is legally prohibited from using it inappropriately.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t prevented, however, from discussing other elements of the leaked data, like internal Tesla information including thousands of alleged customer complaints, some 4,000 of which reportedly focused on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2020\/01\/20\/tesla_hits_back\/\">sudden acceleration<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/08\/30\/tesla_phantom_braking\/\">phantom breaking<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44ZOOiCczXhPYFwmiTaIswiQAAAAs&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44ZOOiCczXhPYFwmiTaIswiQAAAAs&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Handelsblatt described the leak as a failure by the corporation to protect its sensitive data from employees. According to a Tesla lawyer quoted in the original story, one of the leakers &#8211; as alleged by Tesla &#8211; is said to be a disgruntled former service technician whom it claims abused their access to exfiltrate the data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/german-authorities-looking-into-possible-data-protection-violations-by-tesla-2023-05-25\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Per Reuters<\/a>, German authorities said in May they were investigating the potential that the leak puts Tesla in the crosshairs of a GDPR violation, which Handelsblatt alleged is the case.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of privacy violations, Tesla employees were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/04\/07\/tesla_workers_shared_videos\/\">caught<\/a> earlier this year sharing embarrassing camera recordings taken from customer vehicles, something that could open the company up to even more litigation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By default, images and video from the camera do not leave the vehicle itself and are not transmitted to anyone, including Tesla, unless you enable data sharing,&#8221; Tesla&#8217;s Model 3 owner&#8217;s manual reads in contrast to the alleged reality of the situation as described by several former employees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the Handelsblatt case, the leak of so much insider data to a news outlet by Tesla employees raises obvious questions of whether Tesla learned anything from the last incident and whether it has proper data access rules in place.
