But given that BEC scams <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/05\/05\/fbi_cyber_scams\/\" rel=\"noopener\">cost billions<\/a> of dollars a year it&#8217;s small change.<\/p>\n<p>Interpol, Afripol, and infosec companies Group-IB and Uppsala Security provided on-the-ground operational support, the international agency said. It also resulted in a series of investigations and operations against cybercriminals in the region.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent arrests follow several months of similar activity across Africa as international law enforcement attempts to disrupt cybercrime rings that operate out of several countries on the continent.<\/p>\n<p>Interpol last week reported the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/08\/14\/us_government_investigates_microsoft_breach\/\" rel=\"noopener\">arrest of more than 100 people<\/a> across the EU and Africa. Cops also seized more than \u20ac\u200e2.15 million ($2.4m) in assets belonging to the Black Axe crime\/cyber crime syndicate.<\/p>\n<p>The West Africa-based group is described as a &#8220;violent, mafia-like&#8221; gang that specializes in BEC, romance scams, credit card fraud, money laundering and other illicit activities, according to Interpol.<\/p>\n<p>In July, cops in C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire said they arrested a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/07\/05\/interpol_opera1er_arrest\/\" rel=\"noopener\">suspected &#8220;key figure&#8221;<\/a> of a cybercrime group dubbed <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/11\/04\/french_opera1er_group_ib\/\" rel=\"noopener\">OPERA1ER<\/a> reported to have stolen from more than 30 banks and financial orgs across 15 countries.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\"
