{"id":533,"date":"2018-05-14T00:29:01","date_gmt":"2018-05-14T00:29:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/electron-spins-out-a-patch-for-bad-xss-bug\/"},"modified":"2018-05-14T00:29:01","modified_gmt":"2018-05-14T00:29:01","slug":"electron-spins-out-a-patch-for-bad-xss-bug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/electron-spins-out-a-patch-for-bad-xss-bug\/","title":{"rendered":"Electron spins out a patch for bad XSS bug"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2018\/05\/14\/atom_shutterstock.jpg?x=1200&amp;y=794\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Electron developers need to check their apps, after a security researcher turned up a remote code execution bug in the framework.<\/p>\n<p>What TrustWave&#8217;s Brendan Scarvell <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.trustwave.com\/Resources\/SpiderLabs-Blog\/CVE-2018-1000136---Electron-nodeIntegration-Bypass\/\">found<\/a> is that an attacker can turn on services beyond the developer&#8217;s intent.<\/p>\n<p>A developer only needed to be a little careless, accepting defaults without explicitly turning a service off, and their application would be vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p>The post noted that the framework is used by \u201cSlack, Discord, Signal, Atom, Visual Studio Code, and Github Desktop\u201d, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Scarvell explained the conditions for an app to be vulnerable: it&#8217;s built on version &lt; 1.7.13, &lt; 1.8.4, or &lt; 2.0.0-beta.3, and the developer hasn&#8217;t manually set one of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201dDeclared <code>webviewTag: false<\/code> in its webPreferences;<\/li>\n<li>\u201dEnabled the <code>nativeWindowOption<\/code> option in its webPreferences; or<\/li>\n<li>\u201dIntercepting new-window events and overriding <code>event.newGuest<\/code> without using the supplied options tag.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, what&#8217;s going on here? Setting <code>nodeIntegration: false<\/code> in an app&#8217;s webPreferences is supposed to prevent interaction with the Electron API from gaining access to the underlying Node.js \u2013 and that&#8217;s switched off by default.<\/p>\n<p>The <code>nodeIntegration: false<\/code> setting also saves the developer the effort of sanitising user inputs which, if they were handled by Node.js, would enable XSS attacks.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-cards=\"hidden\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"9.8319327731092\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The one bug to bring them all href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/vulnerability?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#vulnerability<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 x0rz (@x0rz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/x0rz\/status\/995358920817430529?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 12, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As Scarvell explained, the vulnerability he found allowed an attacker to change the <code>nodeIntegration<\/code> setting to \u201ctrue\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The issue is in the handling of another tag, <code>WebView<\/code>, which allows a developer to \u201cembed content, such as web pages, into your Electron application and run it as a separate process\u201d, in combination with how Electron handles new browser windows.<\/p>\n<p>An attacker, he wrote, could control the new browser window (the <code>window.open<\/code> command) to pass a <code>WebView<\/code> tag that enabled <code>nodeIntegration<\/code> (that is, set it to \u201ctrue\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>Electron has provided a patch to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cve.mitre.org\/cgi-bin\/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2018-1000136\">CVE-2018-1000136<\/a> in versions 1.7.13, 1.8.4, 2.0.0-beta.4 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.electronjs.org\/blog\/webview-fix\">here<\/a>, along with mitigation instructions if, for some reason, a developer can&#8217;t upgrade. \u00ae<\/p>\n<p class=\"wptl
