Law enforcement are pursuing charges of interference with electronic communications, unauthorized sale of information stored on computers, and knowingly spreading false notifications about safety threats. The Ukrainians have <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/03\/29\/ukriane-russia-bot-farm-disinformation\/\" rel=\"noopener\">busted multiple bot farms<\/a> behind more than <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ssu.gov.ua\/en\/novyny\/sbu-likviduvala-milionnu-botofermu-yaka-rozkhytuvala-obstanovku-v-ukraini-na-zamovlennia-odniiei-z-politsyl-video\">one million fake social media accounts<\/a> since the invasion began in February 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Even before the war began, security researchers tracked a Russian influence campaign known as &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/05\/19\/iran_china_disinformation_online\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Secondary Infektion<\/a>&#8221; spreading misinformation about Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy \u2013 including talk that the Jewish former comedian was a Nazi.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44ZLkbZ6dnvSH7scMndepEqwAAAJQ&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44ZLkbZ6dnvSH7scMndepEqwAAAJQ&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>The uptick in Kremlin-backed information operations prompted Viktor Zhora, who leads Ukraine&#8217;s cyber security agency, to call for a coordinated, global approach to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/10\/22\/ukraine_cybersecurity_chief_mwise\/\" rel=\"noopener\">counter<\/a> propaganda and disinformation online.<\/p>\n<p>The Kremlin, for its part, has also accused pro-Ukrainian hackers of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/02\/23\/russia_fake_missile_alerts\/\" rel=\"noopener\">promoting bogus alerts<\/a> \u2013 like the text messages, radio broadcasts, and sirens warning of air raids or missile strikes on Russian cities that never occurred, back in February.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And just last month a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/the-reidout\/reidout-blog\/putin-deepfake-russia-rcna88014\">deepfake video<\/a> aired on Russian TV purportedly depicting Russian president Vladimir Putin declaring martial law.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">Meanwhile, Ukrainian scareware scammer cuffed<\/h3>\n<p>Over the weekend, Spanish police said they <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.policia.es\/_es\/comunicacion_prensa_detalle.php?ID=15824#\">arrested a Ukrainian hacker<\/a> who has been hiding from US law enforcement for more than a decade.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The fugitive, whose name has not been released, allegedly participated in a massive scareware operation between 2006 and 2011. These messages falsely warned victims that their machines had been infected with a virus, and it could only be fixed by paying up to $129 to buy a fake security program.<\/p>\n<p>This stuff is as old as email, but still people fall for it.
