{"id":52695,"date":"2023-07-03T01:35:46","date_gmt":"2023-07-03T01:35:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/japan-rebukes-fujitsu-for-cloud-security-fails\/"},"modified":"2023-07-03T01:35:46","modified_gmt":"2023-07-03T01:35:46","slug":"japan-rebukes-fujitsu-for-cloud-security-fails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/japan-rebukes-fujitsu-for-cloud-security-fails\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan rebukes Fujitsu for cloud security fails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"label\">Asia In Brief<\/span> Japan&#8217;s government last Friday rebuked Fujitsu for shabby cloud security.<\/p>\n<p>Fujitsu operates a cloud called &#8220;FENICS&#8221; and in February 2023 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fujitsu.com\/jp\/services\/infrastructure\/network\/news\/2023\/0220.html\" rel=\"noopener\">admitted<\/a> that in December 2022 it had detected network misconfigurations that allowed unauthorized remote access to the service.<\/p>\n<p>Last Friday the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.soumu.go.jp\/menu_news\/s-news\/01kiban18_01000200.html\" rel=\"noopener\">detailed<\/a> earlier breaches on mail servers that led to data leaks in May and June 2022. Filipino media <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/newsinfo.inquirer.net\/1795316\/controversy-surrounds-pogo-office-raid-in-las-pinas\" rel=\"noopener\">has claimed<\/a> that some of the detained people were mistreated and perhaps denied due process. The government has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pna.gov.ph\/articles\/1204651\" rel=\"noopener\">rebutted<\/a> those reports, insisting that detained workers were treated well and that their rights were respected.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44ZKx958zXhPYFwmiTaIstowAAABE&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44ZKx958zXhPYFwmiTaIstowAAABE&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p><i>The Register<\/i> has previously <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/05\/23\/fbi_warns_on_asian_jobs\/\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> FBI warnings that fake job ads for work in Asia can lead to slavery at gangs that run large-scale cyber scams.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">South Korea introduces strong digital asset protections<\/h3>\n<p>South Korea&#8217;s government last week introduced regulation for digital assets designed to protect consumers.<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fsc.go.kr\/no010101\/80309\" rel=\"noopener\">Virtual Asset Act<\/a> requires operators of digital asset platforms to hold assets to guarantee customers&#8217; balances, and do so in offline cold wallets. Platforms will also be required to secure insurance to protect customer in the event of infosec incidents.<\/p>\n<p>Disclosure requirements similar to those that apply to capital markets will be introduced, meaning platforms must not mislead investors.<\/p>\n<p>Platforms will also be barred from trading in their own digital assets.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33ZKx958zXhPYFwmiTaIstowAAABE&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33ZKx958zXhPYFwmiTaIstowAAABE&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Authorities&#8217; powers to inspect and supervise digital asset outfits were also enhanced and clarified.<\/p>\n<p>The measures were introduced, in part, as a response to the May 2022 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/05\/17\/terrausd_luna_crash\/\" rel=\"noopener\">collapse<\/a> of the Terra\/LUNA stablecoin scheme operated by South Korean nationals.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">Indian bank with terrible security fined<\/h3>\n<p>In 2022 <em>The Register<\/em> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/04\/05\/mahesh_bank_no_firewall_attack\/\" rel=\"noopener\">covered<\/a> India&#8217;s Mahesh Bank, which lacked a valid firewall license, failed to use phishing protection or an intrusion detection\/prevention system, and duly fell victim to a cyber attack.<\/p>\n<p>Hyderabad City Police on Sunday <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/hyderabadpolice\/?locale2=sl_SI&amp;paipv=0&amp;eav=AfbSD_14Q9gRKmC_7n-EXRXzUtUYNSdbOrqY2PwVthIpCDBj7TC02QkHJWY5CNy74jw&amp;_rdr\" rel=\"noopener\">pointed<\/a> to media reports the Bank has been fined \u20b96,500,000 ($80,000) for failing to follow infosec regulations.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">AWS, Alibaba, pledge to accelerate e-commerce Chinese exports<\/h3>\n<p>Amazon Web Services last week staged a summit in China, at which it announced a &#8220;Smart Vision Overseas Plan&#8221; that will see the cloud colossus help manufacturers use cross-border e-commerce channels to go overseas. AWS will offer route planning and marketing software \u2013 delivered as a service, natch. Partners that provide such software will be welcomed into AWS&#8217;s cloudy marketplace.<\/p>\n<p>Alibaba&#8217;s Cainiao logistics operation, meanwhile, last week <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alizila.com\/cainiao-aliexpress-launch-5-day-delivery-service-express-brand-smart-logistics-china\/\" rel=\"noopener\">promised<\/a> five-day door-to-door shipping from China to customers in Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia. To help that effort, the outfit plans to establishing one or two local warehousing and distribution centers a year.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">APAC tech spend to grow slightly<\/h3>\n<p>Analyst firm IDC last week <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prAP50986823\" rel=\"noopener\">predicted<\/a> that IT spending across the Asia-Pacific region will rise by 4.4 percent in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a jump from the 3.8 percent growth posted in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The news isn&#8217;t all good, though, as consumer IT spending will decline by 2.1 percent in the year \u2013 a nasty number but at least smaller than the 2.6 percent dip counted during 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Enterprise and service provider spend will surge by 9.8 percent \u2013 the same as in the preceding year.<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s reopening is a big factor in that steady spend, as IDC predicts the Middle Kingdom&#8217;s biztech spend growth will accelerate from 2022&#8217;s 6.5 percent to 12.9 percent.<\/p>\n<p>But IDC warned supply chain issues persist, and Chinese orgs may also struggle to find skilled labor.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">Australia tries to take down investment scams<\/h3>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s banks, telecommunications industry, and digital platforms have combined to form a &#8220;fusion cell&#8221; to &#8220;identify methods for disrupting investment scams to minimize scam losses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Australians lose over A$1 billion ($670 million) a year to such scams \u2013 many of them originating online. The National Anti-Scam Centre has therefore promised action &#8220;that facilitates timely action by finance, telecommunications and digital platforms to stop scammers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Taking down investment scams will be one of the cell&#8217;s activities.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">In other news \u2026<\/h3>\n<p>Our APAC coverage last week included news that Japan pretty much <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/06\/27\/japan_jsr_acquisition\/\" rel=\"noopener\">nationalized JSR<\/a>, a firm that makes the stuff that makes chips.<\/p>\n<p>Worried about China&#8217;s progress in AI research, the US is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/06\/28\/ai_chip_tighten_us_export_ban\/\" rel=\"noopener\">considering even tighter restrictions<\/a> on exports to the Middle Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of bans on China, a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/06\/28\/tiktok_lawsuit_montana\/\" rel=\"noopener\">lawsuit against Montana&#8217;s TikTok block<\/a> is being backed on the down low by \u2013 you guessed it \u2013 TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>Hey, remember that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/06\/29\/chinese_spy_balloon_crammed_with\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Chinese spy balloon<\/a> everyone was talking about a few months back? Turns out it was most likely \u2013 surprise! \u2013 a Chinese spy balloon, crammed full of Made In USA hardware.<\/p>\n<p>Huawei reckons it&#8217;s ready to roll out all the gear needed for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/06\/30\/huawei_5point5_g_2024_boast\/\" rel=\"noopener\">5.5G networks<\/a>, as soon as we&#8217;re ready \u2013 and can decide what a 5.5G network actually is.<\/p>\n<p>At its annual Foundry Forum, Samsung announced that it&#8217;s about to begin <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/06\/29\/samsung_foundry_roadmap\/\" rel=\"noopener\">mass-production of 2-nanometer silicon<\/a>, with mobile devices the first to benefit.<\/p>\n<p>Rumors that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/06\/30\/tsmc_supplier_lockbit_breach\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Taiwanese silicon giant TSMC was hacked<\/a> turn out not to be true, according to TSMC.
