It also aims to provide support and mentoring needed to retain women in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/10\/15\/infosec_boys_club\/\" rel=\"noopener\">male-dominated industry<\/a>, and help them to advance in their careers.<\/p>\n<p>WiCyS has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/03\/13\/cisa_joins_forces_with_women\/\" rel=\"noopener\">close ties<\/a> to Tennessee: it was founded in 2014 through a National Science Foundation grant to Dr Ambareen Siraj at Tennessee Tech University, with the cash designated to run WiCyS conferences. Wade in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>As Tennessee&#8217;s laws are seen by some as a restriction on women&#8217;s rights and access to healthcare, WiCyS&#8217; decision in March to hold its annual event in Nashville quickly drew criticism.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44ZItB43bxeX99zUe4IkzWoAAAABI&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44ZItB43bxeX99zUe4IkzWoAAAABI&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Choosing Tennessee for next year&#8217;s conference is choosing to exclude LGBTQ+ people from attending. &#8216;Women in Cyber Security&#8217; should mean &#8216;All Women in Cyber Security,&#8217; not just straight cis-women,&#8221; Google Project Zero security researcher Maddie Stone <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/maddiestone\/status\/1637625244449132545\">said<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa Miller, chief information security officer at Epiq Global, called the choice &#8220;shameful.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thank you WiCyS for choosing and event venue in a state where none of your LGBTQ members can exist safely,&#8221; Miller <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AlyssaM_InfoSec\/status\/1637383087020548096\">added<\/a>. &#8220;Obviously that mission of inclusion was lost.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Later that month, the organization&#8217;s Equity Advocacy Committee, Executive Committee, and Board of Directors held a series of meetings to address concerns about the 2024 conference location.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All potential options continue to be on the table,&#8221; WiCyS <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WiCySorg\/status\/1639381569663127554\">noted<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33ZItB43bxeX99zUe4IkzWoAAAABI&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33ZItB43bxeX99zUe4IkzWoAAAABI&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>On Tuesday this week, after deliberation, the nonprofit returned to Plan A.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have reached a decision that was not made lightly, but after much careful consideration and meaningful conversations, we are moving forward with the conference as planned in Nashville, Tennessee in April 2024,&#8221; WiCyS said in a June 13 <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wicys.org\/events\/wicys-2024statement\/\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The organization books conference venues at least three years in advance, and couldn&#8217;t find another spot to accommodate more than 2,000 individuals, WiCyS added. Canceling altogether was &#8220;not viable,&#8221; and holding a completely virtual event isn&#8217;t sustainable for a nonprofit, it said.<\/p>\n<p>We should add that technology conferences are held away from the US West and East Coast bubbles, and in places like Nashville, in part because it&#8217;s cheaper to hold and attend, among other reasons.<\/p>\n<p>WiCyS pledged to create a safety committee that will &#8220;continuously assess and enhance the security measures at our conferences,&#8221; in light of community concerns.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We understand that the recent and proposed legislative actions in Tennessee have caused concern and discomfort for many, particularly our LGBTQ+ community,&#8221; the statement continued. &#8220;We also recognize concerns regarding access to reproductive healthcare. We want to assure you that we have taken all perspectives into account, and it was indeed a difficult decision to make.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dallas \u2013 which as a Texan city is located in another state that this year passed a slew of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/03\/06\/texas-legislature-lgbtq-bills\/\">anti-LGBTQ+ laws<\/a>, has also banned abortions and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/05\/08\/1174552727\/jonathan-mitchell-abortion-texas-sb8-roe-v-wade-dobbs\">legalized bounties<\/a> on people seeking and providing the medical procedure \u2013 will host the conference in 2025.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">&#8216;Many factors&#8217; at play<\/h3>\n<p>When asked to respond to members&#8217; and conference attendees&#8217; concerns about both host cities, WiCyS Executive Director Lynn Dohm said &#8220;there were many factors that were considered in the decision to keep the pre-booked venues,&#8221; and referred us to the group&#8217;s statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We do feel that the Tennessee legislation and others across the country are leaving folks within these states abandoned, and as a nonprofit organization working to build the cybersecurity workforce, we did not want to do the same,&#8221; Dohm told <em>The Register<\/em>. &#8220;We want to support them. Moreover, constantly changing legislation is presenting a real challenge for us, since we must book our conferences years in advance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>WiCyS has created new criteria for selecting cities as conference hosts beyond 2027. But the bookings for its events between 2024 and 2027 won&#8217;t change, she added.<\/p>\n<p>Conference attendees who don&#8217;t feel safe \u2014 or are just against \u2014 attending an event in one of these locations can livestream the conference. Beginning in 2024, all annual WiCyS conferences will be hybrid.<\/p>\n<p>Dohm said she expects a mix of in-person and virtual speakers, too.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the organization will donate 10 percent of attendees&#8217; registration to local human-rights nonprofits. &#8220;Our current plan is that during registration, attendees will be given an option regarding which charity they prefer for their 10 percent and will also be given the option to make an additional donation to their charity of choice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">Backlash ensues<\/h3>\n<p>While some took to Twitter to express their <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wesley_deanne\/status\/1669034793974263812\">support for WiCyS<\/a>, or the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LauraKenner5\/status\/1668985383760044035\">dire need<\/a> for more inclusive events (like WiCyS) in Tennessee, others expressed their <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LRKSaurs\/status\/1668711457419042817\">dismay<\/a>, raised <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cyberw1tch\/status\/1668726335005511686\">safety concerns<\/a>, and said they <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HUM1D1F13R\/status\/166879418789709005\">won&#8217;t<\/a> show up.<\/p>\n<p>Epiq Global&#8217;s Miller, who is a member of the WiCyS Equity Advocacy Committee, said during the three months of meetings about the conference location, she worked to &#8220;raise awareness with the WiCyS board as to the seriousness of these concerns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can&#8217;t help but feel that while those concerns I and others shared in various sessions were heard, they were not given the credibility they deserve,&#8221; Miller said, in a separate <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AlyssaM_InfoSec\/status\/1668728824949776384\">statement<\/a> about WiCyS response. &#8220;This is not just an LGBTQ+ issue,
