{"id":52141,"date":"2023-05-30T16:08:47","date_gmt":"2023-05-30T16:08:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/34669\/CERN-Spots-Strange-Higgs-Boson-Decay-Breaking-The-Rules.html"},"modified":"2023-05-30T16:08:47","modified_gmt":"2023-05-30T16:08:47","slug":"cern-spots-strange-higgs-boson-decay-breaking-the-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/cern-spots-strange-higgs-boson-decay-breaking-the-rules\/","title":{"rendered":"CERN Spots Strange Higgs Boson Decay Breaking The Rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Evidence discovered at CERN of a rare form of Higgs boson decay may be just what scientists need to prove the existence of particles beyond those predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics \u2013 indirectly, at least.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the Large Hadron Collider Physics Conference last week, researchers working on a pair of CERN experiments \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/atlas.cern\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">ATLAS<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.cern\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">CMS<\/a> \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/home.web.cern.ch\/news\/news\/physics\/lhc-experiments-see-first-evidence-rare-higgs-boson-decay\" rel=\"nofollow\">said<\/a> their combined datasets offer the first evidence of a Higgs boson decaying into a Z boson (an electrically neutral carrier of the <a href=\"https:\/\/home.cern\/science\/physics\/z-boson\" rel=\"nofollow\">weak force<\/a>) and a photon.<\/p>\n<p>Higgs bosons decay in various ways. They can split into a pair of leptons \u2013 an electron and positron \u2013 for example, or a pair of the electron&#8217;s heavier cousin, <a href=\"https:\/\/home.cern\/news\/press-release\/physics\/cern-experiments-announce-first-indications-rare-higgs-boson-process#:~:text=At%20the%2040th%20ICHEP%20conference,matter%20content%20of%20the%20Universe.\" rel=\"nofollow\">muons<\/a>. That&#8217;s not all, either: the ATLAS\/CMS findings also suggest the Standard Model of particle physics, which the Higgs boson should have completed, is actually pointing toward theories that extend the Standard Model.<\/p>\n<p>According to said Standard Model and CERN, around 0.15 percent of Higgs bosons should decay into a Z boson and photon, but the data indicates it&#8217;s actually happening in around 6.6 percent of decays picked up by the Large Hadron Collider. In theoretical models that extend the Standard Model to include other particles, the Higgs&#8217; Z boson\/photon decay rate varies from the 0.15 percent predicted by the Standard Model.&nbsp;In other words, something interesting and potentially undiscovered is going on.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Through a meticulous combination of the individual results of ATLAS and CMS, we have made a step forward towards unraveling yet another riddle of the Higgs boson,&#8221; said ATLAS physics coordinator Pamela Ferrari.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there&#8217;s also the certainty of this discovery to assess, and it&#8217;s not as sure a thing as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2012\/07\/04\/cern_spots_higgs_boson\/\">discovery of the Higgs boson<\/a> itself by CERN scientists in 2012.
