{"id":52007,"date":"2023-05-17T16:22:08","date_gmt":"2023-05-17T16:22:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/another-security-calamity-for-capita-an-unsecured-aws-bucket\/"},"modified":"2023-05-17T16:22:08","modified_gmt":"2023-05-17T16:22:08","slug":"another-security-calamity-for-capita-an-unsecured-aws-bucket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/another-security-calamity-for-capita-an-unsecured-aws-bucket\/","title":{"rendered":"Another security calamity for Capita: An unsecured AWS bucket"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Capita is facing criticism about its security hygiene on a new front after an Amazon cloud bucket containing benefits data on residents in a south east England city council was left exposed to the public web.<\/p>\n<p>Colchester City Council <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.colchester.gov.uk\/info\/cbc-article\/?id=KA-04376\">said<\/a> on Monday it had launched a probe following the discovery of the open storage bucket, and was working with Capita to fully understand the \u201cextent of the data spill and take all necessary steps to minimize any impact on residents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the latest update, the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.colchester.gov.uk\/info\/cbc-article\/?catid=latest-news&amp;id=KA-04379\">council said today<\/a> that Capita had been \u201centrusted with the crucial task\u201d of running the end-of-year auditing services for the council tax and benefits. Capita has confirmed that it has since been made secure and we can confirm that the data does not include any bank details.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote\" readability=\"5\">\n<p>It is unacceptable that Capita has failed to meet these required standards<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Colchester city council has asked for more information from Capita to confirm the \u201cextent of the breach as quickly as possible,\u201d and says it was told there is no evidence, as yet, of any malicious use of the data.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Block, Colchester City Council\u2019s chief operating officer, said in a statement he was \u201cextremely disappointed that such a serious data breach by one of our contractors has occurred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe require all parties involved in the handling of sensitive information to adhere to the highest standards of data protection and it is unacceptable that Capita has failed to meet these required standards. The data is secure and no longer accessible. Our investigations into the matter are ongoing. The privacy and security of our client information is of the utmost importance to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This latest development comes on the heels of Capita shutting down its part of its internal systems in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/03\/31\/capita_confirms_it_outage\/\" rel=\"noopener\">late March<\/a> after detecting a digital break-in of its infrastructure, which the outsourcing giant admitted to in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/04\/03\/capita_confirms_security_attack_as\/\" rel=\"noopener\">early April<\/a>. Russian ransomware crew <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/04\/18\/capita_breach_gets_worse\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Black Basta has claimed responsibility<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Capita subsequently said <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/04\/20\/capita_admits_to_evidence_that\/\" rel=\"noopener\">4 percent<\/a> of its server estate had been accessed and it had some evidence of data exfiltration. It later updated investors to say around <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/05\/10\/capita_breach_costs\/\" rel=\"noopener\">0.1 percent<\/a> of its servers has been accessed.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the UK\u2019s largest private pension scheme said Capita had written to it to warn that details of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/05\/12\/uks_largest_private_pension_scheme\/\" rel=\"noopener\">470,000<\/a> active, deferred and retired members was held on the servers that were accessed by the intruder or intruders. This includes names, date of birth and National Insurance numbers. The data, the Universities Superannuation Scheme added, might not have been stolen but it was laboring on the assumption that \u201cit was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, a security researcher <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/05\/08\/in_brief_security\/\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> they found an open AWS S3 bucket of documents belonging to Capita in April, which was secured after the organization was alerted.
